Training a dog not to jump - trainers, what do you think of this advice please?

Have just watched a video clip by someone called Eric Letendre on YouTube who recommends this method - when a puppy or dog jumps up, you should take their front paws and hold on to them for a few seconds, squeezing gently. He says that many dogs find it unpleasant to have their paws touched and make the association between this and the jumping up.

My goldie (4 months) has started to jump up quite a bit when she gets excited and I want to stop her asap. I do get her to sit before treating, before putting on her lead and we greet or fuss over her when all 4 paws are on the ground but she's still becoming quite 'jumpy'. Is this guy's method known to anyone else? Does it work in conjunction with the other stuff? Is it cruel?

Thanks in advance

Please don't do this - she is likely to become very shy of anyone near her feet and could ultimately get grumpy about it if pushed too hard on it. Imagine her stress if she needs to then have her nails cut - and the poor vet or vet nurse on the receiving end. You need to keep working on the method you are using and she will improve in time. She is still very much a baby at this stage and you can't expect her to be perfect with what she has learned just yet.
Have fun with her and keep up the work

My dog is jumpy. Especially towards visitors. I ask them to turn their back cross their arms and not engage with him until he is sitting calmly. It has worked with my mum and Dad but my niece and nephew are still too scared of him to turn their backs on him.

thanks beautifulgirls. As a novice puppy owner, I am looking for advice -there are so many differeing opinions out there. Will continue with the ignoring until all 4 paws are on the floor and 'off' - didn't work today when she was filthy and wet after a walk in the woods but all part of the joys of puppy ownership I guess

Oh God no oxo - not in the positive training/clicker vibe at all .

I'm clicker training Elsie to sit when new people come into the house, yes her bum is up and down like a bride's nightie but she has already got an association with doorbell - new person - put bottom on floor - C&T.

The girls and dh know to ignore until all 4 paws on the floor anyway but I'm thinking of putting a sign on the front door asking people to ignore her until she has sat down. I may even attach a box of treats to the front of the house so they can give her a treat if she sits nicely.

Okay, I am duly chastised

You are right - it goes against all the other positive stuff ............

I guess its hard with a house full of kids and their friends all shouting "ohhhh, she's so cute, I love you puppy" and letting her jump all over them. Will stick to positive, I promise

Love the idea of a sign on the door - might have to go there myself!
