Do I get my dog neutered?

He is now 6 1/2 months old and I just don't know whether to get him neutered or not.

I don't intend to breed him. He isn't agressive but does mount dogs and people given half the chance!

I have enquired at the local vets for the cost and the best time for the operation to be done. But I just don't know for sure.

He is currently attending puppy classes so I figured if we did go ahead with the op, it would be after they finish.

Any advice?

they feel about a year is best
Its a simple op
if you dont want to breed then its sensible

What about showing him do you intend to because I know some of the shows won't allow neutered dogs not sure which ones.

No intention of showing him either.
His parents are both working dogs, he is just a family pet.

Never had a dog neutered before, but keep hearing/reading its a good thing to do. I know it stops them roaming. So far he hasn't been off lead, well other than the time he slipped his collar, but I do intend on letting him off in the next few weeks.

If you don;t intend to show/breed then I would get it done.

It's generally a good idea.

Also, a fence is the only thing that will stop a dog from roaming ;)

He can jump our fence already, only into neighbours garden! We have plans to get a bigger fence so that should sort that out.

Op will cost approx £200, dh said he couldn't take him. Strangely, dh didn't want to hear the details of the op either

Neutering, especially at an early age, generally decreases the risks of dog aggression, stops them from roaming and prevents undesirable behaviours such as humping the vicar's leg when he pops in for tea and cucumber sandwiches!

It also removes the risk of testicular tumours and decreases the risk of prostrate problems and hernias.

If that's not enough reason, have a read of this heartbreaking article which gives a further reason why neutering is so important.

My dog is the same age, and I also want to get him neutered. I have read that complete male dogs produce more dander than neutered males or bitches. My dh has an allergy that we are managing by keeping the house as clean as possible, and using petal cleanse. However, if neutering could reduce the dander, I would prefer to get him done sooner.

Why is it important to wait until he is 1 year old? I was hoping to get him done in the next month. Will I do my dog any harm if he is neutered at 7 months?
