his tail looks as though it has been deliberatley injured unless a dog has bitten it but half of the tail has no fur and is totally raw. the cat looks very dirty and i dont want to risk trying to get him incase he scratches me. i have two cats and two children so would hate to bring anything into the house. what should i do? he wanders about or estate daily and even tries to get into some houses, mine included. his tail really does need attention, it looks incredibly painful and dirty.

Call the RSPCA - they will come and collect it/treat it

ShinyAndNew · 28/04/2010 13:17

Aren't your cats vaccinated? There is no reason why he should pass anything onto them.

Get a cat box with some food to lure him in and keep him secure the call your local branch of Cats Protection League.

ShinyAndNew · 28/04/2010 13:19

CPL would be better than RSPCA. When we rang RSPCA they said they couldn't come unless the cat was contained because they might not be able to find it . CPL came straight away.

booyhoo · 28/04/2010 13:19

yes they had their annuals in feb.

if he scratched me would i need a tetanus? i dont know when i last had one.

I'd put food down for him outside until he was confortable with being around me, take him to the vet to get treated. If he has a microchip he can be re-united with his family, if not get him vaccinated, wormed, flead and chipped, and gradually introduce him to the household.

StepSideways · 28/04/2010 13:20

but that's just me!

ShinyAndNew · 28/04/2010 13:20

Probably, just incase. But that's nothing. If you lure him into a cat box there should be no need to touch him anyway. I bet he's starving.

scurryfunge · 28/04/2010 13:20

Do you have a Blue Cross in your area? They are far better than the RSPCA, who will not attend to animals in those circumstances, bizarrely.

booyhoo · 28/04/2010 13:22

we dont really want another cat, i am happy to take him to the vet though.

i will leave the cat box out with somefood near it and see if he responds, he darts off anytime i go near him.

booyhoo · 28/04/2010 13:32

thanks, got them. i left a message so hopefully someone will get back to me soon. going to try and get a hold of him now.

Unless you want the cat dead within days, call anyone but the RSPCA.

He sounds like someone's pet fallen on hard times if he's trying to get into houses with a family.

Thanks for trying to take care of a lost soul. He's revolting now and I can believe you wouldn't want him near your family, but he might scrub up well and become a fine figure again for someone else. (My best ever cat started off exactly like this)

wannaBe · 28/04/2010 13:36

if you have a cat carrier put some food inside and then shut him in when he goes in (if you can get him to go in.

Then you can take him to the vet - vets do have links to cat charities/organizations who can help to find him a new home if you don't feel able to take him on yourself.

StepSideways · 28/04/2010 13:38

Yes, unless you want the cat to be put down, don't call the RSPCA, they are very likely to put him down the same day.

booyhoo · 28/04/2010 13:46

i got the number of Assisi animal protection from my vet and they will take him if i can get him to them so just need to get him now, the box is out and ive been tapping a can of soup hoping he will come but instead my own two almost trampled me down. no sidn of him at the minute but will keep popping out for a look.

Try and coax him with some nice smelling food such as tinned cat food or tinned fish (e.g. tuna or sardines)

if he starts to eat near you, try and stroke him, when he gets used to being stroked try picking him up whilst holding him securely by the scruff of the neck.

If he is too nervous to come near you, try getting a loan of a cat trap (rather than a cat carrier) which you can leave out with food and when he goes in he will be trapped.

If you get scratched by a cat, it won't harm you, I have been scratched more times than I care to remember and nothing bad has ever happened to me anyway :p

booyhoo · 28/04/2010 18:45

i think i have jynxed it by calling assisi, he hasn't been back since. CPL also phoned back and say they will pay the vet costs if i take him to my local vet so i gave them my vets details and they were to inform the vet. the only thing is, what do i do with him once he has been seen by the vet? we really dont want another cat, for one my male cat goes hysterical when he sees this one i dont think he would stay at home if i brought this one home. i thought CPL would try and rehome him?

OP posts:
catinthehat2 · 28/04/2010 19:02

Boo - might take a few days to trap him. I did it by finally opening front door to plate of grub then trapping inside house before stuffing cat into basket. I don't see why you need to keep him ifyou've got your own mogs. Surely you can resuce him and hand him over to professional rehomers?

booyhoo · 28/04/2010 23:41

that's a good idea, i shall try and lure him into the house and that way he is trapped.

love the name, is that a suggestion?
