How do i rehome my dogs :(

northernmonkey · 28/04/2010 11:05

I have to rehome my 2 beautiful springer spaniels
I am splitting with m H and am moving to the other end of the country into rented housing and ALL houses i have found will not take pets even though i have asked

I want them to go to a fantastic home but dont know how to go about sorting it. They must be homed together because they're always together
Any advice

My heart goes out to you, NM. What an awful situation.

Try the Springer breed rescue first - can't link you but should come up on google.

All the very best x

Where abouts in the country are you?

try here

or here

or here

Might be worth contacting the breeder if you bought them as pups. He/she may have contacts or even want them back themselves. Otherwise rack your brains for lovely people you have met out walking your dogs who might be suitable or ask at your local vets.
Good luck, I would be a wreck in your situation.

whatwasthatagain · 28/04/2010 15:28

Oh no - how awful - I only have one springer but I adore him and am already having palpitations about putting him in kennels for 2 weeks. There are loads of good springer rescue organisations - good luck.

northernmonkey · 28/04/2010 15:39

Thankyou all for you replies

This whole situation is getting to me
I'm hoping that by some miricle i can get a home that will take pets or even that the council will rehouse me that way i get to keep them both

I'm in the south yorkshire area. Will look out for a springer rescue place nearby. I'm just perified they will be put to sleep because they cant be rehomed

Oh this is worse than i thought

Maybe tell us a little bit about the dogs and where you're moving to/from in case anyone on here can help?

MmeLindt · 28/04/2010 15:41

Oh, how awful.

Can you post what kind of accommodation, and the general area you are looking? Perhaps someone on MN will have an idea where you could look.

Disenchanted3 · 28/04/2010 15:41

northernmonkey

try postinbg on this pet forum here

they are really helpful, someonbe will be able to do something I'm sure.

Doodlez · 28/04/2010 15:45

What about having them fostered until your circumstances change or you know for deffo where you are going etc? You retain ownership but the dogs are fostered and looked after for you until you can have them back?

See here

Here's an extract from that website:-

The first is where a temporary home is sought by an organisation for an owned animal. This may be necessary when an owner is unable to care for their pet for a short period of time. This is normally due to crisis or personal circumstances beyond their control, i.e. if the animal?s owner has to go into hospital for treatment, is evicted from their home, has an accident, etc. The animal is fostered until the owner?s circumstances improve and they are able to take it back.

northernmonkey · 28/04/2010 15:49

My girl is 4, 5 in december and my boy is 2, 3 next feb. They're both fab with kids and cats as i have a cat too. Understandably those who know springers will know they are not so good with birds as they have brought me a few of those in the past!!

Both up to date with injections, de-fleed and wormed etc but neither have been nuetered (sp?)

They are both VERY calm suprisingly but love to bounce around and can walk for miles and miles

Oh i do hope i really dont need to rehome them. I'm just looking at the possibility i might have to
XH wont have them. He works all day too so and hasnt got the time to spend with them.

Also unfortunately dont have the breeders name of my boy anymore and my girl i got from my neighbour and she has too many herself.
Neither are kc registered

Please contact your vet. They know your dogs, and they often know of suitable homes. Although rehoming is not in a vet's remit it's surprising how many happy-ever-after stories we have

northernmonkey · 28/04/2010 15:56

Thankyou all for the links
Fostering seems like a good option

I'm wanting to move to Brighton. I'm looking to move in July/August time.

I went to see the council there and sadly they said they couldn't help because i have no local connection there. I need to move there because my ds has special needs and my MIL is more than willing to help me look after him.

I'm registered with some estate agents but they have said they will not acccept pets or housing benefit (Which i wil have to star off on untill i get myself on my feet)
Sorry i'm just ranting now

ShinyAndNew · 28/04/2010 15:58

They sound like great dogs, who would find a happy home pretty quickly.

Where are you moving to? Perhaps some one on here may know of rental properties in that area that allow pets.

Spidermama · 28/04/2010 16:01

I'm so sorry. This will be painful for you. I've just re-homed a cat and it was really tough.

BUT, it was the right thing. She wasn't happy here.

I got an email from her new owner today with photos showing her in her new home.

I can offer you some good advice ....

My big regret is that I didn't do it very well. When her new owners first came to meet her I thought it would be best to get it over with there and then so I picked her up and she struggled. I then had to make her go into their basket and I just let them take her away. I keep revisiting this moment and it has made me very sad.

On reflection I would rather have taken her myself to her new home. Let her out of the basket and stayed for a cup of tea there before saying my tearful goodbyes.

Take your time and decide where you think they'll be happiest. There are plenty of spaniel lovers out there who will want to snap them up.

Good luck.

fruitshootsandheaves · 28/04/2010 16:03

here is a site nearer to you. If they are too full they may be able to recommend somewhere for you. Also there is a story on there very similar to yours where the dogs were fostered for a while and then returned. here
fingers crossed for you, I have a springer too. I'm sure his breeder would be able to recommend some people too but he is in the Lake District so is a bit too far away to be of much help.

Spidermama · 28/04/2010 16:06

I see you are moving to Brighton. I'm in Brighton. I put my cat, with photos, on Gumtree and in the Friday Ad.

I don't understand how you manage to have a boy and a girl with neither of them neutered. That must be problematic!

withorwithoutyou · 28/04/2010 16:10

If you do need to give them to a rescue manytears.co.uk is a no-kill shelter and would definitely rehome your lovely dogs.

My lovely springer came from there and I feel so for you. What an awful predicament for you.

I used to live in Brighton and I'm racking my brains to think if I know anywhere that would be suitable for you to live.

ShinyAndNew · 28/04/2010 16:21

Perhaps if you told any prospective Land Lords about |Dog insurance for Tenants they might be more willing?

CountryGirl2007 · 28/04/2010 18:21

It is difficult to find rented accomodation with dogs, but not impossible. You could offer to furnish the house yourself or even pay a bigger deposit to cover any damage. If it's not long term, you could possibly even squeeze them in as outdoor dogs? Not ideal but better than giving them up forever, and not as bad if there was only one.

I also seriously recommend getting at least the female spayed ASAP as it's a miracle if she hasn't gotten pregnant yet.

If you do however decide to rehome them, make sure you do a home check and don't just give them to a random person, make sure they have a secure garden, find out their working hours, how much exersize they plan on giving the dogs etc. and try and find out if they actually know anything about dog care!

oxocube · 28/04/2010 19:38

Am so sorry for you OP. What a tough decision . Am praying thing work out for you and you can keep your lovely dogs

Vallhala · 28/04/2010 20:49

My heart goes out to you NM.

Having just moved into another rented house with my own 2 dogs I know how difficult it is to find accomodation which will accept pets and as a rescuer I know the alternatives too.

I would urge you to advertise on Gumtree to see if you can find an amenable private landlord. My advice is not to mention the dogs until you can speak with him or at least email him. This will give you a far better chance of speaking positively than a few words in an ad ever will. Think ahead to what you can offer landlords... a higher deposit? A slightly higher monthly rent than the asking price? Landlord/tenant/pet protection insurance such as that offered by Petplan (would have been circa £20pm for my Lab and GSD)? References from a vet/behaviouralist/trainer? Professional carpet cleaning when you leave?

However, should it come to it, never EVER advertise your dogs on Gumtree ESPECIALLY as they're unneutered. You'd have no real idea what their future held if you rehomed privately. Please, if you have no choice, leave it to the experts. Consult breed rescue and/or independent NO-KILL rescue - I can vouch for Many Tears, as was suggested here by withorwithoutyou. Ask what "no kill" means to any rescue you consult... does it include aggressive/old/expensive to treat dogs in that term?

And never confuse a rescue with a dog pound. Those run by councils or which take in council strays are pounds and NOT rescue and they WILL put to sleep.

I so hope you can take your babies with you.

Thinking of you.

Val

Vallhala · 28/04/2010 20:50

PS Certainly foster is a very good option - be prepared to pay for food and insurance and start off by having a word with breed rescue about it.
