Seriously how am I gonna stop my tot getting mauled! Am getting nervous now. I have a playpen and a crate for the pup. Should I get a puppy pen too. Should I separate off a part of the garden?

I have a 9month baby and a 7month Lab he seems to know that the baby is delicate and goes really careful with her he didn't at first mind it took about two weeks for him to learn.

You are probably thinking I am insane for getting a pup so soon after baby but we had wanted one for a while good breeder turned up and my ds4 was really upset over visitors paying more attention to the baby so a dog sorted all those problems you will be fine.

What dog are you getting?

I had a Golden Retriever puppy when my DS2 was 18 months old, it was hard work, but they actually played on the floor like two puppies and nibbled each other's ears! The dog always seemed to understand that he had to be gentle, by the time DS2 had turned 2 they were really best friends, and would be found asleep together in the garden after lunch. I am sure it will be fine and the crate is a really good idea, I had one for my German Shepherd puppy a little later and found it did mean I could get on with some stuff which is difficult when you are constantly supervising the baby and the puppy, they were never left alone together at first.

Have you had puppies before? Because it really is a full on, full time job at the start, and not one I'd undertake with an 18 month old child.

I have a nearly 19 month old and a 6 month old Staff puppy, its fine!

They tend to roll about on the floor together quite a bit, if Lola (pup) gets a bit too much I can seperaate them with a stairgate, Lola also has a crate.

Now the weather is nicer they have the most wonderful time playing in the garden together, Ds absolutely loves the dog, I think they are going to have a very close bond!

I've just pulled out of an 8 wk old lab pup because 23 mth old DT's are terrified of our 12 yr old lab (who has only recently come to live with us again having stayed with my parents for a few years). I'd spent ages looking for the right pup, a certain bloodline and a good breeder so am pretty down in the dumps about it. I had your nightmares about pup jumping up on one of DTs and scaring her even more ... DS decided that DT's wouldn't be scared of pup because she'd be more their size than our old girl who's deaf as a post and grunts like mad! Don't know whether it was the right decision - I felt really guilty calling the breeder and letting her down at such short notice too - but it's made now and I'm trying to forget about it ... but keep coming back here to read about everyone's lovely dogs!

Millie1 I read about your situation on your thread actually.

Well we have three kids and the oldest is 6, then 3 and the boy who is 1 and half. The pup is a black lab of course totally gorgeous. I am quite nervous though, I feel like I am having another baby!

I don't work and have a clear diary other than kids clubs etc which can easily be skipped so it will get lots of attention and I think the weather is quite nice for toilet training. Although at the owners house the pups already always go outside and not in their house. They will be 7 weeks tomorrow and we are taking her on Monday, a titchy bit early as the poor owner has broken 2 vertabrae in horse accident.

Have seen them again today and am all excited again. Her little puppy crate is ready with lambskins and toys - ahhh it is another baby!

Hi Flum ... have just seen this! Our situations are similar ... I'm home all day too. I envy you going ahead - and I think you're doing the right thing - I chickened out, don't think DH was fully on board either (that's just come out since i cancelled the pup) so perhaps not a bad thing. Going to get a few chooks to keep me busy and will re-think the pup later on.

Anyway, have you got yours now? What's she like and how is she settling down? Hope it's going well.
