Barking dog

Our neighbours have just got a puppy. Our dog, 16 months, has taken to barking every time they take her into their garden. Not just a quick bark, but her night time someone approaching the house bark - volley of barks with bit of growling chucked in! She normally doesn't bark much unless someone comes down the side of the house.

How do I stop her doing this? She hasn't met the pup yet, but am hoping this can happen soon. The pup makes no noise, but I assume our dog can smell her when she comes outside.

The weather is lovely , but I can't let her have a free run of the garden at the moment.

You could try blowing a whistle and treating a few times and then when she goes to bark blow the whistle to distract her if she comes away treat her.

I have seen a similar method used. When she barks, make a loud sound (could be whistle). It's important that your dog doesn't see you make the noise or react to it. The plan is, you make her think the noise is her fault, she doesn't luke it so stops.
Good luck, hope it works for you.

You could by a dog whistle to so only the dog will hear it.

You need to change the mood when the other puppy is about - you need to make it the greatest time ever. So when the puppy is in the garden get a load of treats and go outside with your dog. Feed your dog treats (you need to make sure that they are not barking at the time)when he is aware the other puppy is around. Other puppy equals nice things happen.

We have dogs in the field behind us who bark and get my dogs excited everytime they bark my dogs run up to me for a treat! But no barking now at all.

minimu1 - that sounds a good idea. I'll give that a go.

I'm not sure she'll react to us making noises as she is very focused on the fence and the puppy the other side.

I didn't mean for her to react to the noise I meant for you to blow the whistle treat her do it a couple of times so she associates the whistle with treats and then blow when she starts to back in the hope that the promise of treats will make her forget the other dog and come to you for her treat. But the other ideas sound good to.

Thanks slushy06 - if the playing and treating doesn't work, I'll buy a dog whistle and try that tactic.

Thanks for replies.
