New puppy - dog or bitch?

We will be choosing a springer spaniel mid May to bring home in mid June. We've done our research, DD busy reading Gwen Bailey. BUT not sure yet whether to get a male or female, probably need to decide soonish. Would really appreciate opinions or advice.

I grew up with male dogs (setters), and have no experience of females. I've read up about their first heat and it sounds hard work (and messy - do they have a 'period' of any kind - yes that's how ignorant I am). DD would love a girl, but she will no doubt be happy with either.

Thanks for any tips.

Bumping for you as I've always wondered why most people go for male dogs. Also some people say that female dogs are more moody?

Male dogs are often easier to get hold off and cheaper often they are larger.

I have a male he is great I got him because I went undecided about sex and he was the one that choose me he would not leave my lap he sat there for about an hour where all the other dogs wandered off.

I would research into your chosen breed see if there is any difference and if still undecided wait till you get there and choose the one that you think would be happiest in your home.

My ds wanted a proper daddy or mummy dog but because he was slightly nervous of dogs we decided on a puppy he didn't care dog is a dog.

Also unless you are planning on breeding I don't think sex makes that much difference it is more the personality that matters IMO.

Thank you Mutt and Slushy, great to get different viewpoints. There is abit of me which feels anxious about the spaying op, and a dog avoids that. But Mutt, v useful to hear that you can spay before the first heat.

And Slushy - yes, this might be a good approach for us!

Anyone else?
