My dogs wont eat Arden Grange and I need to try them on something different.

Any suggestions?

naturediet - it's great. our dog has colitis, he has been on naturediet for a few years now and his colitis is really well controlled.

it's a wet food though (not sure whether arden grange is wet or dry) so if you are after a suggestion for dry food i can't help!

Burns is allegedly one of the best foods you can give your dog.

We use Royal Canin for our Viz pup. She loves it and has quite a sensitive tum too. It is one of the few dog foods that I actually think smells nice too!

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 09/04/2010 02:24

Orijen is excellent quality. It is expensive but you don't feed them as much.

midori1999 · 09/04/2010 08:48

Burns, James Wellbeloved, Wainrights, all pretty similar and decent. I don't really like Royal Canin for dogs, but do give it to my cats.

Orijen is probably the 'best' complete kibble, in terms of the fact it has a very high meat content.

We are currently using Jollyes own adult kibble, which has 40% chicken, higher than JWB, Burns etc. They are doing great on it and it goes a very long way. (we are using just over 2 15KG sacks a month as opposed to almost 4 when we were feeding JWB)

Disenchanted5 · 09/04/2010 09:28

Thankyou,

Orijen is too expensive with 3 dogs to feed, will look into Jolleys own, thanks

Skinner's is great, my two goldies do so well on it and it is much cheaper than the likes of Burns.

Disenchanted5 · 09/04/2010 11:23

Have a sample coming from skinners so fingers crossed they like it!

OP posts:
midori1999 · 09/04/2010 11:28

My dogs liked Skinners when they had it, but it is the same price as the Jollyes and has half the meat content, plus I use much less of the Jollyes. Also, some of mine had flakey skin on Skinners, but not Jollyes.

Disenchanted5 · 09/04/2010 11:30

I'll have to walk up yo jolleys, theres one a few miles from us, and have a look at the ingrediants, they don't have them on the website.

Thankyou.

I'll list them in a bit, we have a sack downstairs.

Disenchanted5 · 09/04/2010 12:10

I would actually stick it out with the Arden Grange - have you tried adding a bit of hot water to it, to make it more palatable? I bought the AG for my two greedy labs just after you bought your bags, and they've only just started to eat it properly this past week. They get ND at night so the AG was just for breakfast, and up until now they've been very picky about it. But I'm of the opinion if they don't eat it, they go hungry - I bought 60kg of it, so there was no way I was buying something else! I just added a small amount of boiling water, mixed it up and let it cool for a few minutes so it formed a nice gravy coating, and they wolfed it down every time. The last few days they've had it completely dry and have still eaten it, so obviously we've broken through the barrier now. And I'm glad we have, because it's a great food. They used to be on Wainwrights (which would be no good for your three BTW as the biscuits are too big), and their poos were always a bit iffy. Since they've been on AG their poos have been great, no problems whatsoever. It's also better quality than the WR and much cheaper than JWB.

Disenchanted5 · 09/04/2010 16:19

No they really don't like it, the chunks are too big and they leave it in the bowl for as long as they possibly can.

If I put anything else down, eukanuba or wet, or anything they gobble it up.

I want to find a food they enjoy

I've added boiled water, gravy, tuna, sardines... they just lick off whatever I've added and spit out the arden grange.

james wellbeloved (in the foil packets), not sure what the difference is but the other gives my dog wind .

Also, burns is good.

Disenchanted5 · 09/04/2010 16:55

I've ordered about 4 samples today so whichever they choose I will buy

The problem with a lot of foods like wainwrights/burns/skinners is that they'll just be too big. I thought the AG biscuits were on the smaller size, so if it didn't agree with them you'll definitely need to go for a small breed version of something. If they like the Eukanuba, PAH have got it on offer - 'buy one get one free' on the small breed 3kg bags (works out at £2.59 per kilo). They also have 'buy one get one half price' on the 15kg bags (works out at £2.06 per kilo) but they only have that in medium and large breed for some reason. They've got free delivery at the moment too.

MrsL123 · 09/04/2010 17:01

Sorry meant to say the eukanuba offer ends tomorrow.

MrsJohnDeere · 09/04/2010 17:17

Burns (a 15 kg sack lasts my springer 2 months).

I wouldn't touch Eukenuba or Iams with a bargepole (same company iirc) because of their horrific record on animal cruelty.

Marne · 09/04/2010 17:22

burns do smaller bits/biscuit for smaller dogs.

midori1999 · 09/04/2010 17:31

Sorry. DH went off to PC world with the laptop and I am bed rideen so couldn't get to the PC. Will get him to write the ingredients down tonight.

Burns 'mini bites' will be plenty small enough for a Pug to eat and are suitable for toy breeds as well as puppies.

CountryGirl2007 · 09/04/2010 18:03

Orijen is the best dry food, naturediet is the best wet food besides feeding fresh meat/bones.

Burns is also natural but doesn't have a very high meat content.

rainbowinthesky · 09/04/2010 18:05

Just bought orijen based on this thread so at £52 a bag I hope it's good!!

Disenchanted5 · 09/04/2010 18:07

I ordered the Eukanuba from PAH but cancelled it as its not a good food and they seem a dodgy company.

I think I'm going to go with the natural food company as long as the dogs eat the sample food well.

I'm also looking at vitalin adult maintance, which is small bite and also cereal free.

Disenchanted5 · 09/04/2010 18:09

Rainbow if I had just 1 dog it would be on orijen but I have 3 and will probably have a few more over the years and couldn't afford to keep them all on it.

But it looks excellent and am quite

I was tempted to buy some sample packs but I would feel terrible if they loved it! lol,

might be good for training treats though?
