Can you train a dog to poo in one place?

We're moving to new house soon with a big garden. As great as this will be for the dog and kids who currently share a small patio, I'm dreading spending large parts of my day checking the grass for poos so the children don't tread in them!

Hoping this is not a bizarre/stupid question but you never know...! Perhaps if there are no ideas I should think about creating a dog run down one side of the garden?

Yep - should be quite easy if he is young.
We used to puppy walk for the guide dogs for the blind and it was essential that their dogs did it in the same place in the garden. But then of course that was starting from a tiny puppy....
I'm sure most dogs could soon learn.
Good luck.

My Boxer bitch's wee used to kill all the grass so I trained her to wee and poo on a gravell area down the end of garden where we wouldn't keep getting a whiff of it.
She has been using this spot for 5 years now.
And Boxers are stoooopid!

Thanks Greenshadow, he is 7 next month but maybe as it's a fresh start in a new garden, it's better than if I wanted to start it in a garden he was already used to?

Slinky, Boxers are quite dumb but lovely aren't they? My ex-neighbour had one and if we opened our front door at the same time and he saw me, he'd bolt straight across the road in to my house!

So ladies what are the training tips? Do I put him on a lead and take him to the spot, then reward after he does it?

p.s. he is a Border Terrier.

That is exactly what I did, lotster.
Morning, noon and night take him to the spot every time for about a month. When he has to go on his own reward him if he goes by himself but say nothing if he forgets and goes somewhere else just put him back on the lead and carry on, rewarding all the time. Keep telling him he is very clever and show him how happy you are.
He will get it.

we have just re trained our beagle who is nearly 2 to just wee and poo in a gravelled spot in the corner of the garden
it only took a week we just let him out and pointed him to the corner and told him to wee
if we can train a beagle you should be able to train your border really easily

That's great to hear, thanks!
