I have a list from the internet but can't always get the stuff in the supermarket and there are so many other fruits and veg I wonder if they can have those instead.

TIA.

Don't have a list but ours love:

cucumber
romaine lettuce (their fave)
spring greens
tomatoes
apples
certain types of cabbage (not savoy)
spinach

There are other things but can't think off the top of my head.

FabIsGettingThere · 27/03/2010 14:13

Thank you.

Mine don't like tomatoes or spinach which is a pain.

parsley
celery
sometimes banana's (although my latest piggys are fussy and don't like it)
Xmas trees growing in the garden . The lower branches were nibbled offm they'd be almost balancing on their hinds legs like giraffes trying to get at the prickly bits.
Apple twigs, they love them and are good for gnawing.
Watermelon, they finish off the slices that the dc's don't want.

gibbberish · 27/03/2010 14:18

Mine are fussy about most fruit.

They do love dandelion leaves! And yes, parsley.

FabIsGettingThere · 27/03/2010 14:24

Meglet - are your piggies completely free range?

OP posts:
Meglet · 27/03/2010 14:30

not anymore, those were piggies I had over 20 years ago. We let them run round the garden in the day us kids used to scare off the cats and the piggies happily wandered around did what they pleased. They'd be out until well after dark in the summer and used to retreat to their hutch and wait for us to bring them inside.

FabIsGettingThere · 27/03/2010 14:31

One of mine was free range for a bit last week....

OP posts:
Meglet · 27/03/2010 14:33

was he / she ok?

Wordsonascreen · 27/03/2010 14:38

Mine have:

Celery (cut up as the strandy bits can harm them)
Kale
Broccoli
Apples
Melon (inc rind)
Sweetcorn cobs

I thought tomatoes were a no no ?

FabIsGettingThere · 27/03/2010 17:02

He was a little bit scared I think but a neighbour helped me catch him and then sat and was cuddled by him quite happily. Much happier then when we hold him!

Mine always had grass, chickweed, groundsel and other assorted weeds from the garden!
Plus carrots.

gibbberish · 27/03/2010 17:12

We take the pips out of the tomatoes and they seem to be ok with them.

bruffin · 28/03/2010 18:08

curly kale
coriander
parsley
carrots
apple
spinach
cabbage and spring greens
banana (they like the skin best}
they like lettuce but they are not supposed to eat it too often.
melon (again the peel is their favorite part)
celery
the odd grape.

Their very favorite is cucumber which they fight over even if they have a piece each.

bruffin · 28/03/2010 18:12

Forgot broccoli and cauliflower leavers

clayre · 28/03/2010 18:21

do any of you give them the brocoli stalk? im always tempted but not brave enough

bruffin · 28/03/2010 18:28

yes, they like the little leaves that stick out.

bonkerz · 28/03/2010 18:44

mine also love cucumber and celery and lettuce and tomatoes but our vet told us to limit these items in guinea pigs diet because the high water content in them can cause diarrhea or wet stools which causes wet tail.

FabIsGettingThere · 28/03/2010 21:46

I tried them on banana and they left it. They left the raspberries too.

How many things to you give at each meal and how many times a week?

OP posts:
kingprawntikka · 29/03/2010 12:14

I give mine two or three veg for breakfast and two more for dinner. I give them fruit maybe twice a week. There is a website called Rodents With Attitude, that has loads of useful info, including a list of which veggies and fruits are good for guineas.

mablemurple · 29/03/2010 12:35

All the above plus a new one is mint, which they absolutely love, and celery leaves.

And their own poo, of course

FabIsGettingThere · 29/03/2010 16:17

Do you also give them cereal?

OP posts:
kingprawntikka · 29/03/2010 16:23

No I don't give them cereal, just veggies, hay and guinea pig pellets.

FabIsGettingThere · 29/03/2010 16:50

By cereal I mean guinea pig food - not frosties .

OP posts:
kingprawntikka · 29/03/2010 17:23

Oh well then yes!! I assumed you meant shredded wheat or corn flakes!!

seeker · 29/03/2010 17:27

Ours absolutely adore posh salad - the sort that comes in bags with baby herbs and leaves.

Curly kale is their staple veg, and hay of course. They eat a lot of hay.

I heard that tomato is too acid for them and can give them sore mouths.
