Cat using house as a litter tray...

I have three children, one of which is only 4 months old, and our older cat is using the house as a toilet. I can't cope! It started in the snowy weather but now that's weeks ago and she still does it. I've tried shutting all the internal doors so she won't use one of her two 'usual' spots for a quiet poo. But we've just been out and I forgot to shut one door and guess what? There's a poo! Any suggestions? She's had some antibiotics from the vet in case she had a tummy infection but her poos are normal so I'm guessing this is not the problem. She doesn't seem particularly 'senial' (another suggestion). She's sixteen. She runs and jumps as much as ever so I don't think it is that she doesn't like using the cat flap due to dodgy joints and I've seen her out in the garden a few times. We do have a big black cat that sometimes chases our cats through the catflap but he's been doing it for 2 years and this problem has only recently started up.

Help!!!! I am desperate as I can't cope with another pooing creature in the house!

What I meant to add is: does anyone have any suggestions on how to encourage our elderly cat that outside is the place to go for her toilet? Or even any suggestions as to what is causing her behaviour.

Cats hate eucalyptus oil. When one of my kittens starting crapping on the front door mat (nice....), I put several drops of the oil on the mat and she never pooped there again! She just went back to using the litter tray. It also worked for my sisters' elderly puss (same age as yours) who began using the dining room as a toilet.

Have you got an indoor litter tray for her?

Thanks for the tip! I'll try eucalyptus oil.

We have an indoor litter tray but she doesn't always use it. In fact the younger cat uses it more!

then you need a second litter tray this cat is happy to use, in an out of the way place where she wont be disturbed by kids etc, the type that has a roof and flap.

your cat is showing signs of stress
the weather conditions, old age, 4 month old child and neighbours cats are 2 clues to the possible reason/s.

so her lifestyle needs reassing.

Eucalyptus oil is not good for cats. The oil contains phenols which are toxic (deadly) to cats. Cats lick their paws all the time so they will pick it up on their paws and lick it off and possibly get terribly, terribly ill.
