Cream coloured golden retrievers

Still researching getting a dog (in no rush till we've really thought this through) and currently very in love with cream coloured (pale) golden retrievers.

Would someone who breeds these be doing a disservice to the breed by selecting for the paler coat?

I've found a breeder who breeds pale cream goldies and before even thinking of approaching them, wanted people's thoughts on this.

The other things is - is it unwise to buy a puppy that isn't from a nearby/ local breeder, in case there are problems? We have no issue about travelling to visit a breeder but would the breeder take issue with us being about 3 to 4 hrs drive from them?

we had a pale goldie once and ended up rehoming him at 7 months old as he had serious temper problems and wasn't safe in a family with children. We'd put a great deal of time, effort and cash into dealing with his issues, to no avail.

The vet. nurse who does all the behavioural advice and puppy training at our surgery reckoned that pale goldies have more problems with aggression than dark ones, and that golden retrievers in general often aren't as soft and friendly as people expect...

So it sounds like it's more to do with the parents and breeder than the colour per se?

Is it ethical to put the name of the breeder we're considering, up here, even before we've contacted them, to see if anyone has any experience of them?

Alternatively, can anyone recommend a great breeder of goldies - preferably paler ones - that has been brilliant for them and is UK based (we're sort of in the SE but more than happy to travel except as far as Scotland or Ireland)?

Many thanks and I understand if this doesn't feel right to post recommendations on MN.

I have two golden retrievers who are not cream all over but light gold. There are quite a few very light ones near me and it is as much a fashion as anything absolutely nothing to do with behaviour. The much older goldies I come across are very dark.

To find a good breeder in your area contact the golden retriever club - they have a website and are divided into areas. Each area has a puppy contact who keeps records on which breeder has puppies available or soon to be available. We did this and it was really helpful. There is a lot of info about the dogs on the website.

A good breeder will vet you quite carefully as they are very careful and protective of the puppies. You can also get support after having the puppy too. The club also has a rescue service too.

We picked our dogs because they are good with children and they are - although I always keep an eye on them as well.

Good luck

I breed Goldens, although am in Ireland, and not planning a litter for some time now, so no use to you. However, if you want to run any breeders by me, I can tell you if I have heard of them or can suggest someone in your area I know of. (what area are you in?)

Colour makes absolutely no difference to temprement. What does make a differnce is the fact that Goldens are a popular breed and so highly back yard bred and puppy farmed, and these people do not car eless about the breed, nor temprement or type. I have seen some awful looking badly bred Goldens.

A lot of breeders are breeding paler Goldens these days, and show lines (which tend to be calmer and make better pets in general to working lines) tend to be paler. That said, you can get pale working dogs and Golden show dogs, but more often than not you see pale dogs in the show ring. I personally don't like them too pale, and prefer mid gold, but am not keen on very dark gold dogs.

A good breeder won't mind how far away you are, but will probably want to meet you several times before agreeing you can take a pup.

Do be prepared to go on a waiting list for a well bred Golden. They are suprisingly hard to find! Expect parents to be a minimum of hip scored (less than 18 unless a really ggood reason for otherwise!) and eye tested clear. Also, younger dogs should also be elbow scored, although this is a fairly recent development and a lot of breeders haven't caught up with it yet. I wouldn't discount a breeder soley on the fact they hadn't elbow scored, but would if they hadn't had hips or eyes done.

If you want to run the breeder by me, or me ot reccomend anyone (just seen you are South East ish, and I know or know by reputation quite a few breeders in that sort of area) then email me at [email protected]

I have two goldies from the same litter and one is golden and the other, who incidentally was the runt, is so pale he's virtually white - he has a lovely temperament, very mischievous and excitable but so affectionate and gentle. I don't think the colour has anything to do with their temperament.

Mine is very pale. His dad is white, and spectacularly beautiful.here's a picture.

Ours is creamier than that - his mum is more golden. He's not aggressive, and he's easy to train. Bit wild and bouncy, but am hoping he'll grow out of that .

Romanarama, your dog is absolutely gorgeous!! Thanks everyone and many thanks midori1999. I've contacted you off-list. Very kind of you.

One of ours is cream. . He's beautiful.

Think on the Kennel Club papers it has the color defined. His mother was cream, but his dad was golden.

Have emailed you back Solo2. None of the breeders specialise in cream/pale dogs, but all will have some in their litters. Hope it helps.
