Dying Hamster Killed By CageMate.

We had 2 robervoski (males).
1 has been looking very 'old and poorly'.
This morning i found it dead- but its throat had been attacked by the other one.

this has REALLY upset me.

was this a case of the strong attacking the weak...or was it 'helping' the sick one by ending its misery...or did it do this after the sick one died- as it was stressed about the death.

The reason i ask all this- is i planned to replace the robbies with 2 russian saphire blues (as the robbies i knew were getting old)...but now i feel reluctant to ever have more than i in a cage.

in the past i ALWAYS had syrians- which you HAVE to cage alone...and found it so cute that there were breeds that you can cage together...syrians also 'look' so lonely...

I don't know, hamsters are weird.
We once had two, H1 got out and was missing for a day, we found it and put it back in cage with H2 who promptly did a handstand in the corner - to show how happy he was.....?

Get gerbils next time.

When I was about 13 I had two dwarf Russian hamsters.

One (Pipsqueak) was really nuts, always diving about, making noises, running in his wheel.

The other (Dude) was quieter, more typical hamster behaviour in sleeping all day and up at night.

One morning I woke up to find that Pip was missing and Dude was looking even fatter.

There was practically nothing left.

I did have other hamsters after that but if I was to buy something for my boys (to go with the cats, dog etc.!) then it would be a guinea pig. They are lovely.

Hamsters are omnivores. That's normal behaviour, and the damage was most likely done post-mortem, if that makes it less gross!

DH had two hamsters as a child and came home from holiday to find half of one missing. He didn't know if the hamster had been killed by the other or just died and then been eaten but it has put him off ever having hamsters again (understandably). We're hoping to get guinea pigs when our DCs are a bit older instead.

We have 3female dwarf hammies-sisters & had always been together.
The smallest started to get attacked, so we took her out.
Then the remaining 2 started fighting,so we now have three cages!

At least they all seem happy though!

FabIsGettingThere · 24/03/2010 13:26

We had 2 boy rob's living together fine for a year and then started fighting so we separated them the following morning and they were fine after that.

msrisotto · 24/03/2010 13:27

OMG I had no idea hammies were so bloodthirsty! disillusioned

diddl · 24/03/2010 13:32

Blondeshavemorefun · 24/03/2010 14:50

strong attacking the weak

sorry for your loss

we have syrian and never put in same cage but are next door to each other and have a natter

GetOrfMoiLand · 24/03/2010 15:01

Who knew bloody hamsters were so Conan the Barbarian bloodthirsty?

Blimey. I would have thought it of gerbils but hamsters, no.

DaisymooSteiner · 24/03/2010 15:12

I don't know what's happened to (hamster) society in the last few years. You never heard of this sort of thing happening when I was a child [disgusted of Tunbridge Wells emoticon]

MrsForgetful · 24/03/2010 19:54

i'm only just feeling civilised towards the survivor.
I couldn't bear to look at his darling cute face...i was so upset.

His name is Scampy....and he was one hell of a scamp.

My sister's friend once came downstairs to find one of her hamsters looking a bit fat with a tail hanging out of his mouth.

Which is why I'll never have one.
