I'm really worried. Took my greyhound out for a walk and let her off the lead. She bombs off down the path at top speed as she always does, goes round bend out of sight. Then there is awful screaming, which carries on and on and on.

Took me a good minute to run to her and she is still screaming, can't put any weight on her front left leg. She's booked in at the vet at 10:45. I've had to leave her in the car on the drive as she can't jump out of boot. God knows how I'm going to get her out to get into vets.

Please someone says she's probably just sprained it and not broken. She has a big cut on her face as well.

I can't say without examining her - but greyhounds do hit things at enormous speeds and are v wimpy (but lovely) dogs, so its always hard to guess either way!

Pop into reception and ask one of the nurses or receptionists to help get her out the boot if your worried - they won't mind. If necessary ask if the vet is running late and leave her in the car until they are ready - they often find the floor slippy/a busy waiting room too much to deal with if they are in pain.

Don't feed her incase they are keen to take xrays this morning, she will probably need at least sedating if the cut needs stitching too (again, this depends on size, depth etc)

I hope it goes ok - both of you must be having a tough time this morning!

Oh poor thing. Why on earth can't they fit her in straight away? Hope it's not too bad. Let us know what they say.....

Poor you. Hope that she is just being a wimp and vet gets her up and running.

timelordvictorious · 17/03/2010 10:29

Oh bless her.

I hope everything is ok, and she feels better soon.

Let us know how you get on.

stripeyknickersspottysocks · 17/03/2010 10:31

Oh poor dog!

I have a lurcher and he screams terribly if he ever hurts anything, I think sighthounds have a low tolerance to pain in general.

We thought he'd broken his leg on a walk through the woods while we were on holiday last year, dh had to carry him back to the camper (and he's not a little dog) and we drove back to the holiday house really fast to find the local vets number, but before we got him there he started weight bearing again, the vet couldn't find anything wrong and we still don't know what happened because he was just out of our eyeline when he did it.

Hope its a similar story for your girl and she's racing around again in no time. Will keep everything crossed for you/her.

MrsL123 · 17/03/2010 10:55

Oh no, poor thing!

I have to admit if it's an emergency I just turn up without an appointment, because I know if I call in they never have anything available straight away, but they won't turn away an injured animal if it's in front of them! But mine are there at least once a week and we're probably their best customers so I don't think they mind too much - and if they do I don't care as long as my dog gets sorted

Really hope you get on OK, fingers and toes are crossed!

stripeyknickersspottysocks · 17/03/2010 11:29

Thanks for all the messages. Vet doesn't think its broken, it seems quite stable she says. Also weight bearing a little no though still major limping. Quite a bit of screaming at the vets while being examined! Her shoulder is very bruised. So she's had painkillers and an anti-inflammatory and we're seeing how she goes. If worse tomorrow will be x-rayed. She's fast asleep now, think she's feeling very sorry for herself.

SeaShellsOnTheSeaShore · 17/03/2010 11:46

Glad its not broke! She'll be stiff when she wakes

moosemama · 17/03/2010 11:57

Glad they don't think its broken. It does sound like she ran full pelt into something then, if her shoulder is badly bruised. Hopefully she'll feel better after a good rest and when the painkillers and anti-inflammatories kick-in. As SeaShells said, she'll probably still be be stiff though.

I don't know, sighthounds huh, you think they'd be able to see where they're going really wouldn't you.

MrsL123 · 17/03/2010 12:13

Glad it was good news, although her shoulder sounds sore

The best thing I can suggest is Arnica, works wonders on healing my accident prone pups!

claricebeansmum · 17/03/2010 14:35

poor poppet

Could you not tell what she had run into?

stripeyknickersspottysocks · 17/03/2010 16:14

I'm not sure she had run into anything, she wasn't by anything when I caught up with her. About 5m away from a barb wire fence, guess she could have run into a post and jumped back but she knows the fence is there and never tried to go through it before. Infact she knows she can't get through it as she's very disgruntled when my friend's smaller dogs do.

I wonder if she put her foot down a rabbit hole, or just stumbled badly on the uneven ground?

OP posts:
claricebeansmum · 17/03/2010 16:17

That sounds possible. So she has had a bad tumble poor thing. They are muppets. So pleased nothing more serious. Did you have to carry her back to your car?

How's she doing now?

moosemama · 17/03/2010 16:22

Poor girl.

That's a thought. As you said, she would be unlikely to run into anything that's part of her normal route, but a stumble at top speed could potentially cause a lot of damage and would explain the cut on her face if she went down as well.

How is she doing now?

mrsfred · 17/03/2010 18:17

Glad it was positive news from the vet. Hope she is feeling better soon.

stripeyknickersspottysocks · 17/03/2010 18:26

I'm quite worried about her really. I got her into the garden about 3:00pm (lots of screaming), it took ages and she just stood by the door and refused to have a wee. Took ages getting her back in the house.

She hasn't been up to her bowls for a drink or food though I've hand fed her 3 sausages in bed She is crying/whining constantly for the last 2 hours.

I'm going to have to try and take her out for a wee again soon. DH is away and she's too big for me to pick up, don't know how I'mgoing to do it.

aJumpedUpPantryBoy · 17/03/2010 18:32

I hope she's OK - did the vet give you any painkillers for her?

We were on the beach once and a beautiful lurcher who was chasing a sick started screaming as if in agony.
We rushed over to help and she was fine - the owner said she was a real baby and shrieked if she even jarred herself.

MrsL123 · 17/03/2010 18:36

Stripey you could use a bath towel as a sling under her tummy to support her weight, which might help her.

Poor thing

Romanarama · 17/03/2010 18:44

Have you got any neighbours? I'd be round asking for help from someone.

stripeyknickersspottysocks · 17/03/2010 18:50

I have got painkillers, the vet said I could give her one tonight but the nurse said to try not to 'cos the injection she had this morning was the same stuff. Think I will give her a tablet later this evening though.

Anyway she just got up, I went to slice up the left over beef roast and she came to see if she could have any. When I cooked dinenr I couldn't tempt her off her bed with any meat so she's either feeling a bit braver or a big more hungry. She's now had a wee, a drink and something to eat. Loads of screaming at every step though, am half expecting the neighbours to come round to see if I'm being killed. I don't think I'll try getting her up again this evening, if she needs a wee in the night she'll bark and wake me up. She may gotill morning now though as she hasn't had much to drink.

stripeyknickersspottysocks, how is your dog today?
I hope she is feeing better.

stripeyknickersspottysocks · 19/03/2010 08:18

She is fine now, thanks for asking.

Can't believe that she was still screaming and limping on Weds eve and when I got up Thurs morn she was jumping up and down begging for a walk! I took her out and she was fine. Sometimes a bit of a limp when she first gets out of bed but definetly so much better.

OP posts:
SeaShellsOnTheSeaShore · 19/03/2010 10:25

Hi so glad she is feeling better!

If you are still giving her pain relief make sure you still rest her - they can continue to irritate the injury if they go nutty on the leg!!
