To the vet or not?

I have a fairly accident prone labrador and her history of illness is extensive. Most significant I think is a gastric torsion 2 years ago (she also had bloat as a pup).

She has eaten too much bone and is completely bunged up. She devoured it on Saturday and by Sat evening was looking a bit uncomfortable. On Sunday she was breathing quite fast, really not being herself and refusing to do much in the way of exercise.

It took me until Sunday lunchtime to work out what was wrong.

She has had a few poos (v solid bone) - I am taking her out for a walk every hour or so to try and work it through. I've increased her water and fibre intake and have added a bit of oil to her meals but can't think what else I can do.

She is wimpering when she poos, and is behaving precisely as she always does when she is in pain or ill. She is eating as normal.

Can the vet do anything to help? Should I take her? For once, I just don't know what to do for the best.

Poor thing

As an owner of two very accident prone labs myself - yes, I would take her. Especially if the oil hasn't helped. They might want to give her an enema to clear her out, or may just give you a laxitive, but either way best to get her looked at incase there's a blockage. Hope she gets on ok

laxative - can't spell today

MrsL - these accident prone dogs! Mine is very rarely a little bit poorly. She excels herself with both illness and injury.

She's being walked every hour or so, to try and walk the blockage through - at the moment she's out with my DH who says she's looking a bit brighter and has done a less solid poo.

I've phoned the vet just because I'll feel less worried once we've been. The vet could probably retire on what we've paid him .

Ha. The vet is going to have to postpone his retirement. The problem has resolved itself . She is very obviously much more comfortable.

I worry about her insides after the torsion - they can't possibly be the same as they were.

But MrsL - your beautiful girl is the spitting image of one of mine (not accident prone catastrophe girl though). I wonder if there is any similarity in their pedigrees. I've put a pic of her on my profile.

Nice bandage though - we've never had such a top colour. Glad she's on the mend. Poor girl.
