Puppy Pen

We're getting a golden retriever puppy in about 3 weeks, when he will be 8 weeks old. We're planning on using a crate, but I'm wondering if we should also use a puppy pen, with the crate inside. We have a cat who has had no experience of dogs, and also our house has no one room that will be particularly easy to puppy-proof. I thought a pen might make it easier to keep the puppy (and the house) safe, and allow the cat to get used to the puppy at more of a distance. I would only be thinking of using the pen for a few weeks, until he is house-trained and the cat becomes used to/resigned to the puppy. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have a newish puppy and havn't used a pen but if it helps you to socialise him with the cat and the children it can only be a good thing.

It will keep him safe and secure and as long as he isn't left in there for a long time i don't see the problem.

We have a bulldog who is at his happiest curled up at my feet under the desk

Good luck

We did this. Got a lab puppy last summer and we bought a cheap playpen for her. It worked well for keeping her contained a bit. Our house is totally open plan so not easy otherwise.

Thanks very much. I think a pen seems like a good idea, now I'm wondering how high it should be. Hopefully, it will only be used for a few weeks, so shouldn't have to contain a full-grown retriever.
