Quick DAP Collar Question :-)

After 10 minutes of faffing (!) have finally got the DAP collar on Ruby MacScooby

Quick question: it says it must be in close contact with the skin. I have set it at the same fitting as her regular collar (ie close but still able to put two fingers between collar and skin. Is that okay or does it need to be tighter?

So long as she cant pull it off it will be fine - it releases the DAP pheromone around her, not into her skin.

Okay, thanks

how soon before it begins to work?

She has had it on since 10.30 this morning and still no discernible difference in whining/anxiety etc . I know I should be patient but I am getting rather hacked off with the constant whinging

What is causing her to need one?

tulpe · 09/03/2010 20:10

she has separation anxiety and also hates going in the car. I thought it might help to calm her, having tried all other options I can think of.

Shall be v annoyed if it doesn't work. Sodding thing cost £24.99!!!

Crikey - mine was £14 from the vet. Isn't your puppy still very young, tulpe?

tulpe · 10/03/2010 10:39

shall go to vet next time, Bella

Yes, Rubes is still only 12 weeks and I appreciate that is very young for expecting miracles However, my feeling was I wanted to help soothe her and comfort her without it having to come from me, iyswim so thought the DAP collar would help. It is one that is specifically for pups and small dogs.

hello tulpe

Sep Anx is specific clinical diagnosis with specific sypmtoms.
Its acgtually quite rare, in most of these cases its more often like separation related problems.

All pups, by definition, have issues with separation from owners.
That is, they havent devoloped independance yet, which is a process that takes a couple of months.

The same would apply for car travel.
It would be a natural starting point for a pup to be of car travel.

What are the specific signs and symptoms for your pup that indicate to you sep anx?

The questions to ask at this point would be:

how have you done your home alone training?

what have you done thus far to foster an 'initial' sense of independance?

how have you done your socialisation training?

As a dog trainer myself, my first instinct is to think that maybe you just require a pup training class, instead of spending money on a collar which either works completely with some dogs, or makes no differnece whatsoever with other dogs (the latter is my own experience in my study).

Using a DAP collar is kind of getting into the territory of dealing with behaviour probs, when it may just a normal puppy training and socialsiation issue that we can help or advise you on?

Also, what breed is your pup, how much has she left your house, and how do you exercise her?.
