Am i mad to be thinking about taking on a friends dog?

I think he is just over a year old maybe 18mths old. Jack Russell. Friend bought him of another friend (5 mths ago)who had him and his sister (she still has his sister just decided 2 was too many).

Anyway, friend has decided she has had enough of him and is thinking about re-homing him. She says he keeps chewing and escapes into the neighbours garden.

Basically, it sounds like it is just too much effort to t rain him and care for him properly.

I already have a 6yr old Greyhound which we have had for 2 yrs.

So, do you think i would be mad to think about taking this poor dog on and give him a loving home?
I have to be honest, i don't know much about stopping a dog chewing but am happy to get help with that if need be.

As you already have a dog and are under no illusions about them I really hope that you do take the poor little thing. Such a shame that he's already had 2 unsuccesful homes.

I love dogs

Thanks. Nice positive reply. My DS2 has promised to feed him and walk him with me when i walk our dog if we take him on. He loves jack russells.

Agree with Alouiseq . You have already BTDT so you know what to expect

If you feel you can handle it, then giving a home this little one is a very generous and kind thing to do

Good luck!

Really nice of you to consider it. You sound like the sort of person a passed around dog would be better off with. Dogs need commitment and love, then anything is possible

Thanks tulpe and junglist1 .

I'd say go for it, Jack Russels are great little dogs and he will be company for your Greyhound

Have been talking to her and we are going to take both dogs on a walk together 1st to see how they get on. Generally my dog isn't very interested in other dogs apart from to have a quick sniff! Then he looks away lol!

At least yo u'd know what you're taking on!

Slambang · 10/03/2010 20:32

Can you do a trial run? 'Foster' him for a weekend or week to see how it goes?

Tortoise · 10/03/2010 20:40

Slam - Actually that Sounds like a good idea. Could be the next step after letting the dogs meet on neutral territory. Not sure i can 100% trust her to be honest about the dog but she has 3 DC and he is good with them, that would be my main worry!

My dog met the dog today and they seemed to get on well although the jack Russell did jump up at him quite a bit. Luckily my dog wasn't too fussed!
Friend is keen to get rid now as he chewed her last pair of shoes. Personally think he justs wants some attention.

Next weekend he is coming here for the weekend. DS2 is very excited.

Think i will get his bits chopped but no idea how much that will cost plus his booster jabs are due this month!

Sounds to me like he needs a little bit of love. My 5 yr old Jack Russell is very loving and friendly and is a great little dog with my dc.

Getting his bits chopped is quite important as they tend to be quite randy little dogs.

Once trained they are really obedient and easy to get on with. I think mine stopped teething after about 18months so he should start to stop soon. Mine used to eat walls but he has completely grown out of it so there will be an end to the chewing.

You sound an ideal owner for him and I am sure it will give your greyhound a lot of pleasure to have a companion.

Good luck and I hope you are really happy together!

Thanks lilmiss. I agree he needs some loves. He has no dog toys to chew so he chews their things. He dragged me along on the lead so i think he needs a harness although i have no experience of them.

He did seem rather randy even towards my Male dog! Will speak to the vets to see how expensive it is to have it done. My Greyhound was already done before he was re-homed with us.

He seems like such a lovely dog (bit chubby! Will have to deal with that too![grin[)
