Puppy being sick :(

tulpe · 06/03/2010 16:06

She last ate 3 hours ago. She threw up most of her lunch about an hour ago and has been sick once again about half an hour later. She looks very sorry for herself, laying in her basket

What is the best way to take care of them when they are pukey? Does she need to see the vet? Should I feed her as normal (next feed due at 6pm) or should I just leave her with water only?

Poor little mite. I do feel sorry for her

BTW, afaik, she hasn't eaten anything she shouldn't have - we are very vigilant. The only thing different today was that she had her first training session from 11 - 12pm and then ate an hour later.

Aww- sick puppies always look so completely and utterly miserable, don't they?

You have no need to rush to the vet right now. I would give her water little and often. If she continues to vomit I wouldn't give her her next feed. Feel her ears to see if they feel hot (the old dry/ wet nose thing is a lot of rubbish- the ears are a better rough guage to temperature!) You can also check if she is dehydrated by lifting the skin at the back of her neck- it should fall down rapidly, but if it stays up like a tent, it could mean she is getting dehyrdrated and should see a vet.

If she continues to vomit/ is vomiting more than 5 times in a couple of hours/ still not right by tomorrow I would see a vet (expensive on a sunday, I know, unless your clinic has a Sunday surgery!) Puppies tend to seem very ill but can recover quickly. However a nasty virus or foreign body (although I know you don't think she has eaten anything untoward!) can cause them to go downhill reasonably quickly. hth

Thanks Joolyjoolyjoo. I really appreciate your advice.

So if she isn't sick between now and 6pm, will it be okay to feed her? She is currently on Royal Canin Babydog. Would it be better to cook a little chicken or rice for her? (am thinking along the lines of feeding a pukey DC ).

If she continues to be sick overnight I will take her to see the vet. Not sure if ours has a sunday surgery - never had to use it before - but thankfully the cost won't be an issue. Just need to make sure she is a well little girl.

DH is out playing field hockey this afternoon so I am dealing with this alone Thanks for taking the time to reply

Awww bless her. Can't really add to what Juley said other than to say that dogs are VERY GOOD at being sick. It's how they survive in the wild - eat first, throw up later if rancid or poisonous. It's quite a natural function for them iykwim.

tulpe · 06/03/2010 16:34

Thanks PortBlacksand. That is very reassuring to know

Yeah, if she isn't sick between now and 6pm, either give her a little of her normal food or, if you know she can tolerate it, a little chicken/ pasta/ rice scrambled egg (I only say that as I have known some dogs that are actually made sick by so-called bland food, but they are few and far between!)

But yeah- it is much like a pukey child! Let us know how she is!

PortBlacksand · 06/03/2010 16:39

Yes let us know...

(sorry Jooly i spelt your name wrong - unforgivable from someone constantly called PortandBlack on here )

Joolyjoolyjoo · 06/03/2010 16:46

Lol- don't worry, PortBlacksand (see how I was careful to get iut right !)I respond to most versions of my name!

tulpe · 06/03/2010 18:14

Thanks both

She hasn't been sick again so I will leave her just half an hour more and give her a little food. By that time DH will be home and he can clean up any sick that comes up!

DH came in half an hour ago. She went from being all floppy on my lap to bounding at him with an extremely waggy tail! We gave her a handful of her regular food and, so far so good

Thank you so much for keeping me both informed and calm this afternoon

Typical that DH seems to get the best parts of both parenting and dog ownership

Tis always the way Tulpe.

Glad she seems better now . Fingers crossed...

Thanks PortBlacksand.

Well she had a good nights' sleep and has had her regular breakfast an hour ago without any consequences

Obviously back on her feet now

Oh good! Like I said, puppies are always soo dramatic when they are unwell! I remember sobbing when my boy was sick for one whole day as a pup- and I'm a bloody vet! I had convinced myself he had contracted some horrible disease from one of my patients, therefore it was my fault! He was fine (and is now nearly 15!!)
