A close family member is leaving his dog alone for 24 hours at a time, about once a week. The dog is a fearful little thing, but very sweet and loves company. I am not in a position to be able to help out. I am fucking fuming to be honest, the reason he is leabing the poor thing is to shag his new girlfriend. AAAAAARGGGHH!!!

i'd be fuming too! sadly what can actually be done apart from tellin him he's a prat i dont know. i do know that as great as welfare groups like rspca are they wont do a jot if the dog is left with food and water. i dispair with people who have animals and simply cant be arsed looking after them!

Call the RSPCA - they have a duty to investigate any allegations of neglect and maybe a visit from them will be the wake up call he needs to stop doing it. They will investigate anonymously.

It makes me so sad - I don't leave my girls for more than four hours and my fellow doggy owners all help each other out and have keys
to each other houses for emergencies.

I'm not sure if the RSPCA can do anything if the dogs is well kept, clean and fed.

I would talk to him as there are lots of pet minders out there (bound to be some ads in the newsagents and vets, local paper etc). They usually only charge £15 a day. YOu could even offer to pay to shame into it.

Are you in a position to find out whether there's a local pet minder or dog walker, and then give him all the details with numbers and costs? It sounds like he's not that bothered, so would need for it to be low effort for him to bother doing anything.

The RSPCA may well be able to take action. The law has changed which makes it easier to act on cases where an animal is at risk.

Where is he leaving the dog though? We used to 'leave' ours with access to a run, fresh food and water (timed bowls) and able to get inside to shelter so it wasn't neglectful, just necessary.
(I do understand that shagging ones girlfriend is not necessary, but for us it was)
