Doggy Ph.D recall thread

As a first time dog owner I'm finding this recall thing to be hard work and I would guess I'm not the only one -though accept the rest of you are all far more proficient at dog training than me and I might be on my own !

I need to have for my sanity one of those dogs who will recall beautifully in any situation and although she has made a lot of progress there is still a long way to go (she's 8 months).

Would anyone like to join me on my mission and would the experienced people who have cracked this mind offering some tips ?

Squirrels will never look at me in the same light again either...

thanks for all the useful posts on here, am defo going to wrk hard at this - they are all still going on, on my puppy being kicked insident post - why did I bother?!!

Bella32 · 23/02/2010 11:06

Met some grown ups on my walk this morning - with lovely, very well behaved dogs - so had to keep out of the ditches

Good job I left the squirrel suit at home, eh?

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 24/02/2010 17:27

No squirrel suits or cheese hats here today or yesterday. Yesterday we saw a couple of dogs so as soon as I saw them I called her and treated her a couple of times which was good, but seeing as she was on extending lead she didn't have a whole lot of choice.

Today there wasn't a single dog, I could have got away with wearing the squirrel suit and cheese hat. I did see a RL squirrel scuttle up the tree but she didn't clock it.

How is everyone else getting on ?

There's no shame in admitting you just like wearing the suit, Wynken

We had a good walk today too - pup is definitely improving, methinks. Other people and other dogs have never really been our problem - it's the elusive scent she sometimes picks up.

I puff up with pride quite frequently as mine recall instantly away from other dogs, while the other dog ends up following us. Might just be the smell of roast chicken emanating from my treat bag though

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 24/02/2010 19:18

Yes but but but, I take roast chicken and that still doesn't work ! I'm hoping that being back to training will help with having to concentrate around other dogs. And when I next have friend and dog round we'll have a shot at practising calling them away whilst playing.

Oh ok, you've sussed me on the squirrel suit. I'm planning on wearing the banana hat to our new allotment, that will set Bert and Dennis off

I suspect it will confirm all their worst fears about you, Wynken

MeMudmagnet · 25/02/2010 14:19

Can I join in?
I've not posted here before, but I like the idea of this thread.

I've got an large breed pup and although her recall isn't bad as she doesn't go far from me yet, I know the Kevin stage is looming so I seem to be just waiting for everything to go tits up!

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 25/02/2010 15:05

Absolutely MeMudMagnet, the more the merrier My Kevin is asleep next to me, DH did the walk today and I haven't had a chance to quiz him, though he did mutter about a 15 month dog they met who used to be mad and is now quite normal which sounds hopeful.

Think you might be right about their worse fears Bella, they are having trouble with my name at the moment bless them and it's not that unusual, the hat might send them over the edge. There's probably something in the allotment rules about suitable head gear I reckon.

Come on in, memudmagnet, and lol @ Kevin

What's odd about the name Wynken anyway?

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 25/02/2010 16:37

I think Wynken would have just about finished them off Bella

lol - I love people like that. Kind of eggs me on to try and shock them as much as possible

Perhaps the squirrel might - ahem - branch out into bondage gear?
