Poor cat having part of ear removed today

My poor moggy is going in to the vet today to have part of his ear removed - he has skin cancer. It's affecting his nose as well, but v. slow growing so the ear op is palliative really - it won't affect the long term outcome but should make him more comfortable. The vet is very positive, but would appreciate thoughts from anyone with experience of this about whether you think he will feel better for it? He's had blood tests and in fine fettle otherwise, so vet believes that this is worth doing. Very worried about doing the right thing.

Don't worry - you are absolutely doing the right thing. Very straightforward, relatively minor op, and am sure you will feel much more sorry for him than he will for himself
All the best x

no experience just wanted to offer some virtual hand-holding. It's a horrible thing you are going through today, but I'm sure your cat will be fin - I don't think they have many nerves in the ears so presumably he'll just be a little tender afterwards and will get some kind of painkiller...some cancers do seem to be very slow-growing in cats so hopefully you will have lots of extra time after this. Paws crossed

Like thirtysomething, I don't have any experience of what you and puss are going through, but I just wanted to extend a virtual heartfelt hug in your direction. It is so hard to have to sit back and watch them go through things like this.

Thank you He has had such a horrible winter. In December he was attacked by another cat who bit his leg so badly he had to have a pin in the joint and was in a cast for 4 weeks, then has had a bout of sickness. We're feeling better than we were last week when we really thought he was on his last legs, so v. relieved when the blood tests all came back clear. He's 13 years old and the children adore him, and he was my baby before I had babies...

How is he doing?

Hope he's recovering well x

FWIW I knew a cat who had had both ears removed owing to cancer. He coped admirably and if anything got even more attention and fuss from us neighbours and passers-by as he lounged in the sun outside his house because of it.

Bella didn't add it and I don't know if you're aware, but she's an ex vet nurse so you can be sure she's right in what she's said.

I hope the little fella is okay and wish him all the best.

Thank you all for your kind thoughts. He is doing really well - he came home last night and was very glad to be back in his own house having dinner! He looks pretty grim - almost the whole ear is gone - but he is pretty calm and it doesn't seem to be troubling him. Back to the vet in 10 days.

Just need to persuade the insurers that they would like pay the bill now ...

Brill news - best of luck sorting your claim out.
