Puppy food, which one do you use/recommend?

My pup is being fed on Wainwrights dry puppy food, its what she has always had (from breeder)
She is getting there slowly with the housetraining, but when she poops indoors it STINKS!

My SIL has a Whippet pup and she says his poo's don't really smell, Im not sure what she feeds him, but was wondering what other people use and whether their dogs poops smell so bad!

Our pup is on Royal Canin dry puppy food. Like your pup, it was the food she had when still with the breeder. I haven't noticed any bad smells - and I have an extremely sensitive stomach (there were times when nappy changes with the DCs sent me heaving into the bathroom!!)

I doubt Wainwrights would cause the stink as it's hypoallergenic and doesn't have any nasty additives or chemicals in it - one of our dogs has colitis and it's the only dry food she can eat without it upsetting her tummy (apart from James Wellbeloved which is basically the same recipe but has some mystery 'JWB special ingredients' in it - don't know what these are, so it puts me off using it - plus WR is a lot cheaper!).

Up until about a week ago we fed both of ours the WR wet trays and dry food (dry food in the morning and wet at night) and always found it great. We've recenly changed to the NatureDiet trays but only because I can get them online for 62p each (instead of 79p for WR) and we use about 100 trays a month, so it'll save us a small fortune. But they still get their WR dry food.

Apart from the smell, what are her poos like? Are they small and firm, or do you find them a bit loose sometimes? Do you feed her anything else, maybe training treats or chews? It only takes a couple of well-meant gravy bones from a stranger and ours get the runs, so we have to be really careful adding anything to their diet (they have the WR or JWB treats).

our guide dog puppy has EUKANUBA chicken flavoured dry food which we add a tiny bit of water

Her poos and F**ts smell though ~ but it seems only since last week when she had her 12 weeks jabs

I have no idea if that is possible or coincidence

Bella32 · 18/02/2010 19:11

Sloppy poos which are very smelly can be due to an infection, so if that's the case pop a sample in to your vet.

I use Royal Canin but have also used Hills and James Wellbeloved in the past.

RTKangaMummy · 18/02/2010 19:18

Bella ~ her poos are firm and normal and they happen like clockwork 3 times a day ~ they just smell ~ when you pick them up

I have only noticed her F**ts since her 2nd jabs ~ quiet but deadly!!!!!

MrsL123 · 18/02/2010 19:29

If her poos are firm I wouldn't worry too much. Unfortunately poo stinks

Maybe your SIL has just lost her sense of smell a bit

BrigitBigKnickers · 18/02/2010 19:40

We use Burns and because she is not a very big dog she still has the small bites variety now.

I tried her on a few different ones when we first had her. James Wellbeloved was highly recommended but it made her very windy! Never had any probs with Burns. Sometimes I add a bit of gravy to make a change but she seems to wolf it down with or without.

Kanga - my comment was to the OP but that's good to know.

Thank you for sharing, sweetie

LOL

@ guide dog puppy class this morning one of the other puppy walkers said that we were all totally obsessed by poos and wees

izzybiz · 18/02/2010 20:07

Thanks for replies!

What a lovely subject for a Thursday evening Her poos are firm and look fine, they just stink!

I was just hoping that there would be a miracle food that caused smelless poo!

I think having a dog definitely makes you poo obsessed - yesterday morning I got called downstairs at 7am, only to be greeted by DH at the bottom of the stairs with a poo in his hand (in a bag, obviously!) that he wanted me to examine because it had 'something wierd' in it. After close investigation, the 'something wierd' turned out to be an undigested piece of carrot. DH forgot their new food has veggies in

Strangely though, examining poo before breakfast seems completely normal! All we talk about in our house is poo

midori1999 · 18/02/2010 20:14

Raw/BARF feeding causes fewer and far less smelly poos, but it isn't for everyone.

tulpe · 18/02/2010 20:59

MrsL123 I found the poo obsession was also true when we had DCs. Especially DS1. I vividly remember keeping DH fully appraised all the poos and wees of the day

Madsometimes · 19/02/2010 17:05

Patch eats Hills food, mostly in tins.

He is quite a fuss pot, and will not eat Pedigree Chum or any other brand. His poos are not too bad, but he does fart.

Romanarama · 19/02/2010 17:23

Oh come on, poo reeks. I don't believe that any people or dogs do poos that don't stink.

Anything with dried meat/poultry as 1st or 2nd ingredient is reasonably good and also free from artificial things of course. Orijen is about the best dry food you can get, not sure if there is a pup version though. You sometimes have to be careful feeding top quality dog food to pups as it can be too rich.

home cooked or raw meat/bones is of course a great option though, doesn't take too much time and around the same price as feeding good quality dry.
