Help needed with puppy toilet training!

Hiya,

My CKCS just doesn't seem to get it!

My other dogs go outside and so she doesn't see them wee/poo (shes not completed vacination course yet so still inside)

She just poops/wees everywhere.

My older pups were really good and allthough they did do the poo/wee in the house thing they were likely to do it on the paper/near the back door, she does it anywhere.

The older ones never did their buisness in their crate so when I put them in at night they stayed dry & clean and then went to the paper when let out in the morning.

This pup is just soaking her crate and dirtying herself

I got up this morning and took her straight to the paper and was saying wee wee on the paper, holding her there, she just cried and wanted cuddles.

As soon as she came int he living room she did a huge wee on the floor then pooed in the kitchen whilst I sorted the wee,

how do I learn her to use the paper?

Are you saying she doesn't go outside at all because she has not had her vaccinations? That is not necessary at all it is fine for her to out in your garden.

She must be taken into the garden to wee and poo. Throw away all paper indoors and take her outside to wee and poo every hour maybe more as she is really confused at the moment.

Praise her like mad when she "performs" outside but totally ignore her if she has an accident inside. ( I would say if she does wee inside it is because you have not got her outside quickly enough!)

You say she is caged at night. Make sure the cage is small enough and there is not a lot of room for her to get out of her sleeping area and wee.

She is confused at the momement about where she can poo and wee and as she gets the idea about weeing etc outside the nighttime cage isue should stop.

Poor little one. She sounds quite unhappy if she is pooping in her own crate

I am a total novice with dogs but have found that within a few days our new pup understood the "go wee wee" command and is keen to get the praise. We stuck rigidly to a "once an hour" toilet trip to the garden. And occasionally more frequently if she had just had a drink etc.

We don't allow her to wee indoors - just outside in the garden. There is no paper down inside of the house and there is only room for her bed and toys in her crate (the bedding covers the entire bottom of the crate). I wonder if the paper situation is adding to the confusion for your pup?

Of course, she is still having occasional accidents inside but, as minimu says, it is usually because we haven't been vigilant enough with timing. We ignore it and clean it up when she is out of sight. If we catch her mid-flow, so to speak, we whip her up and out of the door asap. Just today, she sat at the door for the first time asking to go out.

I don't know how true this is, but I read somewhere recently that if the pup sees you cleaning up after them, they take this as acceptance of their actions......perhaps someone more expert can confirm

Shes not unhappy, shes a super happy pup! She just poops in here crate overnight.

Disenchanted - sorry - I was just wondering if she is stressed/unhappy whilst she is in her crate which was why she was pooping in there.

Disenchanted3 · 13/02/2010 14:55

Thats the thing though, she doesn't even cry at night, at all.

She just hops into the crate but wees in it all night!

How strange.

Am also v at the fact she doesn't cry at night at all.....our pup makes her feelings quite clear for the first few minutes we leave her in there!!

Is she weeing on her bed or on the space surrounding her bed? If it's the latter, is there any way of sectioning off the "excess" space so that she is more confined and can't mess there?

Disenchanted3 · 13/02/2010 15:08

She in a small crate 25inch so its 'all bed' its the size of a bedrrom pillow, thats what shes sleeping on and it covers the whole crate but she just soaks it.

Its like it doesn't bother her which I find odd as all my previous dogs hated their own mess.

I'm going to start taking her outside if its safe, Ive always been told to keep them in trained on paper till aweek after 2nd injection.

no not necessary if the other dogs are fully vacc.
If you train them to wee on paper, that is a very hard habit to break
If she is soiling the crate this is highly unusual and often indicates poor mothering from the maternal bitch,
what age was the pup when removed from her mother and litter mates out of interest.
Take them out side ALL the time and praise them with food/cuddles whatever they want the most when they do it.
it does require getting up a lot but is so worth it

Disenchanted3 · 13/02/2010 20:17

Piffle she was 8 weeks exactly.

I've taken her out now but shes not pee'd just been very excited!

DaisymooSteiner · 13/02/2010 20:30

Do you feed her in the crate? We did this from the start to reinforce the idea that it was a 'clean' area.

Disenchanted3 · 13/02/2010 20:34

Oh thats a really good idea!
I'll try that, thankyou,

By the way Daisymoo my dog is called DaisyBoo

OP posts:
DaisymooSteiner · 14/02/2010 22:11

I like it

Disenchanted3 · 15/02/2010 11:03

Oh

Shes been out for wees and poos but shes still soaking her crate everynight.

this morning the blanket was soaked and she'd done several poos in there!

I don't get it!

Ive been feeding her in there and even left her empty food bowl in the corner to enforce it was a clean area.
I'm having to do a huge pissy dog wash everymorning and wash HER as shes been lying in her own wee.

I'm baffled!

Disenchanted3 · 15/02/2010 11:21

Do you think it would be OTT to contact a local dog behaviourist?

I have issues with my other dogs barking too so it wouldn't just be for pissy pup

OP posts:
Disenchanted3 · 15/02/2010 11:23

(Quote would be £70 for a 2+ hour session with all 3 dogs, does that sound OK?)

OP posts:
minimu · 15/02/2010 17:57

Has she been weeing outside in the daytime regularly yet?

How do you clean her crate and bedding?

What qualifications does the behaviourist have- have you been referred by a vet?

I would also ask about the followup care you will get if that is included for that price.

Bella32 · 16/02/2010 08:42

I'd take a urine sample to the vet, just to rule out an infection.
