What do you think of cavadoodles?

Still on the research stage thinking about having a puppy/ dog and have come across the cavadoodle - which sounds lovely.

It seems to have a reputation of being friendly and good with children (I have twin 8 yr old sons), is smaller than a golden retriever - my favourite breed - but needs loads of exercise - and is it possibly easier to manage than a coker spaniel - my favourite of the smaller breeds???

Does anyone know much about them and if there are likely to be specific problems with a specially-bred crossbreed?

I don't have any specific advice about cavadoodles I have just had to google and see if my guess was correct.

However we have an F1B Labradoodle who is nine months now and is beautiful. Very soft natured, excellent with children (we have a 3yr old DS) and lovely with other dogs. His Mum was a first generation labradoodle and his dad was a miniture (not toy)poodle. He is smaller than a labrador but bigger than a mini poodle so probably too big for your requirements.

Try 'Doodle Times' it is a Labradoodle forum but very friendly to all types of poodle crosses. Someone there might have specific advice.

I know hip scores and eyes are the issues with labs/poodles but not sure how much this applies in your case. Hope this helps.

BTW the google pics were very very cute!

why are you thinking of this cross breed?

is there a particular puppy you have found?

look at the list of health testing to be done for both breeds - both sets should be done for a x-breed.

often these x-breeds are sold by unscrupulous breeders who will sell you a dog that is 1) not actually the cross they say it is (no pedigree = no proof) 2)has not had the testing they say it has (so ask to see docs) 3) is a puppy farmed dog presented as though home-reared (of course, this is stuff to be wary of regardless of do purchased, though it is rather more obvious when a breed dog is in fact...not as described)

if you want a dog of certain temperament, you are far more likely to get that from a reconised breed, though of course any dog can make a fantastic pet.

doodle times a good forum. they may have word of dogs needing rehoming too - always consider a rescue first, if you can give one a home, you may be saving its life.

With Cavadoodles the Cavalier parent should be heart checked and the Poodle parent should be PRA checked.
Most Cavadoodles are first generation crosses so do not breed true that is to say within a litter they will not all have the same characteristics and some will shed hair. If you do not want this variation you need to search for a breeder who uses F1 parents that are true to type.
If you love cocker spaniels what about a Cockapoo which there are several F1 breeders about? Though I would make sure they use the English Cocker spaniel rather than american as the temperament is more reliable (i've been bitten bu too many americans).

I know nothing about dogs, but I want one of these.

Cavapoos are fabulous.

Timothy
That pic looks like my dog. She is a Maltese/Cavalier.

We did not go out searching for a particular breed or cross breed. We decided we wanted a small dog, had to be child friendly (obviously) and non-shedding if possible due to DH's allergies.

The dog of our school dinner lady had puppies and so we took one of them. We were able to see the mum with the pups, and of course we knew the family as the girl goes to the same school as ours.

I have read that the Cavaliers are extremely good dogs with young children. Our dog is fab, incredibly loyal and affectionate. She is likely to be in the huff right now though as she is at the doggy grooming parlour.

I thought they were Cavapoos?

Thanks for the ideas. DS1 lost his heart to a crossbreed puppy that looks a bit like a black cavadoodle and he really, really wants one, although we know the puppy he likes (this belongs to someone else BTW, not one we've looked at to buy) is a cross between a Patterdale and something else...sort of scruffy tufty and tiny.

I on the other hand have always loved golden retrievers and second choice - cocker spaniels.

DS2 likes Cavalier KC spaniels - but I just can't make myself fall for those.

In the 'thinking about getting a dog' research, I can see advantages to getting a smaller breed, rather than a golden retriever. Because of all those reasons above, I was browsing youtube clips of puppies and came across the cavadoodle...hence the queries.

Most important of all would be the dog's temperament and if you can more easily find out about that if it's a pure breed, then maybe we should stick to that...though which one?....
