Why don't dogs step in dog poo?

I have had dogs all my life. I have walked a dog roughly twice a day for the past 17 years, give or take a few months travelling/uni etc. I step in dog poo reasonably regularly, maybe once a week (so about 1:14 walks). None of the dogs I have ever walked - and I have walked a dog about 10,000 times - has ever stepped in poo. WHY? Do they have some sort of sixth sense? My dog pelts across the green/fields/woods and doesn't seem to look where he is going - and yet he is always dog poo free!

They can smell it a mile off. I have seen dogs eat other dogs poo.

My pup has trodden in her own poo! she is an eater too (of her own )

I have known lots of dogs, including my own, that have stepped in it before.

Mind you, usually when they are excited as opposed to a normal walk.

Mine do in the garden.

Mine never does either. She will swerve right around it. Quite amazing. Must be their sense of smell.

Mine doesn't (although did as a pup); she does, however, deliberately roll in stinky fox crap

Mine did a lovely big poo in the garden the other morning, stepped in it and then trod it all through the house while I was getting ds ready for school - that was a nice surprise to come down and find

I know what you mean OP, I have a couple of dogs and they always manage to step over dog poo at the last minute but will always go and stick their snout in it for a good sniff - yuk!!!!
