Plans Scuppered?!

Gah! Went for my 12 week pregnancy scan yesterday, only to find out I am having twins!

I am thinking this might mean our plans for a litter of puppies has to go on hold although I am determined (far easier when they are in than out!) but need to discuss how likely Iam to be early etc with the consultant, how often my antenatal appointments will be, and then decide if I have enough favours savd up with friends for any puppy sitting I need! (I don't leave my litters at all, hence needing sitters)

Ther is always some drama in my life....

Oh wow - double congratulations.

If anyone can manage, Midori - you can

sb6699 · 09/02/2010 09:52

Wow - that is wonderful news!!!!

Everybody likes puppy sitting - I'm sure it'll work itself out.

frostyfingers · 09/02/2010 11:14

Having had twins, and also reared a litter of puppies I would think very carefully.....

I wasn't pregnant and my boys were 13 when we had the puppies, but depending on timing I would be careful!

I was reasonably healthy when pregnant, but did have a few stays in hospital, and heaps more appointments than with a single pregnancy. It was also exhausting and I spent a lot of time resting. It may be that you won't get the fun out of the puppies if you are too knackered or feeling rough. I have to say that if it were me I would probably leave it.

However - congratulations, it's hard work, but really good having twins (are they you're first....) and people are very kind, although they do ask silly questions, but you'll get used to that!

midori1999 · 09/02/2010 13:11

Thanks all.

Bella, it's nice someone has confidence in me, I have to say, this is the first time I have doubted myself... I have no doubt I can do it, but wonder if I will find it a total nightmare... Also, if we keep a puppy (and we won't breed unless we do keep one) then it will probably be nearer 3 months instead of 4 when the babies are born, so not quite yet able to go out and about a little on foot, less easy to tire out and maybe not toilet trained by then. It also means DH will be responsible for socialization, (as I'm sure as hell he can't breast feed twins..) and I am not sure I trust him...

Frostyfingers.. these are my 4th and 5th babies. My other DC are 13, 9 and 5, the oldest is more than old enough to help out if he needs to. (he is very grown up for age) Plus, I've had enough litters to be resigned to the fact that they aren't that much fun at all, just hard work... My main worry is that I would give birth before the litter had gone to new homes (I shouldn't, but that's not to say I won't) and that DH will have to spend his paternity leave with me trying to get breastfeeding established and shouting instructions to him from the sofa... although that may well happen litter or no litter...

I think a lot depends on my consultants appointment next week, and when madam decides to come into season. As I well know, the time you are waiting for them to come into season, is the time they wait longer...

However, this is my last chance to have a litter from this girl. The other daughter of hers we have doesn't like showing (it's just sooooo boring, dontcha know?! ) and she is 4 1/2 now. I wouldn't have a litter after she is six, and she has been having phantom pregnancies, so I want to get her spayed anyway due to the increased risk of pyo. So, if we don't breed, she'll be getting spayed after this next season.

Gosh, I do ramble....

Ah well Midori you're an expert at both bits!

I think you're well organised enough and experienced enough to go for it! Congratulations again - my 2 are 14 and I have another of 11 and certainly am not brave enough for another one or two!

Vallhala · 09/02/2010 13:52

Congratulations!

Did I hear "puppy-sitting" mentioned? Me first, me first!

I have to say that 2 DC are enough... you're very brave!

tulpe · 09/02/2010 14:10

Congratulations, Midori

minimu · 09/02/2010 14:35

Congratulations! Midori it must be something to do with liking dogs I have two sets of twins! First pregnancy was twins girls (felt like a litter!) then I had my son and creeping in the back door (mistaken for very early menopause) came twin boys!!!!!!

If I can do it you certainly can - you are used to dealing with litters and not a lot of difference to start with.

Although I do seem to choose to spend a lot of time out with the dogs - wonder why!!

Honestly though although my lot weren't really on the schedule I love my family life tto bits!!!!

minimu · 09/02/2010 14:37

PS My first twins came at 38 weeks but they made me spend the last 2 weeks in hospital but that was 15 years ago. The boys came at 37 weeks.

Good boy!

minimu · 10/02/2010 16:21

Bella too late you have spent far too much time with the twin producers - no amount of digging will get you out of this hole!

I love the idea that Bedlam thinks we are terrifyingly capable I am going to encourage that and stand well groomed dog by the front door to greet you all.

Bella32 · 10/02/2010 17:02

You iron ?

minimu · 10/02/2010 17:15

I just put that bit into impress - I have once. Actually an ironing board is great for training dog walk contacts so I do use that

The dyson is great for teaching left and rights and go around.

Bella32 · 10/02/2010 17:20

pmsl.

Only you could find such worthwhile applications for useless household appliances, minimu

Well....

Her ladyship came into season yesterday, so I have decided to go for it!!!

I'll be about 32 weeks when puppies are 8 weeks, and I am hoping to not go into labour prior to that.

If anyone has experience of whelping a large litter or sleeping on a camp bed for prolonged periods when around 24 weeks pregnant with twins, input appreciated...

Minimu, how old are your twins? Two 'sets', how wonderful! Tell me everythign about being pregnant!

Bella, I think you'd better be careful...
