Is my cat preggers?!

How long would it take to notice that a cat was pregnant?

We have a cat that just walked in one day a few months ago and never left. We tried ads in paper, posters and final call to vets to see if she is chipped but no luck so she is ours, I am very happy about it too.

Vet thinks she is about 10m-1yr.

A few weeks ago I think she may have come into season as she was acting very odd and sticking her bum in the air all the time, lovely

Then dp couldn't get her in one night, she went walkabout and didn't come home until late the next day, then the next day all the oddness stopped and she was herself again making me think maybe she was got at.

So after that essay basically when would I know if she is pregnant or not?

Thank you

I don't think you would know until it was visible. Which won't be very long - gestation period of around 9 weeks.

If she has been on call and been outside the house, chances are she will be pregnant. She would also be likely to come into call again within a few weeks of last time if she wasn't pregnant and cats that repeatedly call and do not get pregnant are at high risk of a womb infection known as pyometra.

The best thing would be to take her to your vet as he will be able to scan from around 4 weeks onwards. If you catch her early enough and do not want her to continue with the pregnancy, the vet may agree to spay her or inject her to stop the pregnancy. If you do continue and she is pregnant, she needs to be fed kitten or quen food to give her extra calories otherwise she is at risk of birthign still born or sickly kittens. You will also need to keep her in arond the time her kittens are due, otherwise she may have them outside.

Well just thought I'd let you know that she is probably, almost, definately pregnant!

Took her to the vets 2wks ago as she had a urine infection so got some antibiotics for her. I asked if she was pregnant, vet said no, not unless she was literally only just got in which case she could be.

I am now thinking the vet isn't very good with cats Cat has very large belly complete with wriggly things inside. From my calculations she is due this weekend.

Thanks for the help.

I would take her to the vet to find out for sure, (perhaps try a different vet if you aren't happy with this one) if it was early on you could spay anyway but if they are nearly full term, not really.

If she goes ahead and has the kittens, get her spayed asap to prevent this happening again. (i.e. when the kittens are 8 weeks old and she is finished nursing, then she can be spayed)

If she has any female kittens, you should also draw up a rehoming contract so anybody who adopts one agrees to have the kitten spayed when it is approx. 5 months old, to prevent her kittens from going on and adding the overpopulation problem themselves!

I'm going to get shot down for this but:

  • Ah how sweet!

I remember my cat giving birth to kittens when I was about 5. Was a magical time for me!

Also a couple of years ago I took a guinea pig to the vet as I thought she'd got pregnant at the pet shop, vet told me she was constipated (the gp not the vet!) and the lumps were poo.

Funny looking poo I thought as she gave birth a month later to two mini pigs.

You don't live near me or I'd wonder if it was the same vet (and ask if I could have a kitten )
