Keeping Bunnies In Sheds

Can you let me know what you think about keeping bunnies in an indoor cage but in a shed. Our current wooden hutch was home made and is starting to get very smelly and has loads of dirt traps. So we thought a clean, plastic indoor rabbit cage might be better but we have to keep them in the shed in the garden.

Will it be too cold for them or do you think it would be OK. During the day, they would come out in the shed and in the summer, they will come out into a run in the garden.

So it is only for nighttime and I'm just worried that they may get too cold/draughty.

what do you think?

Does it have a little house or something inside it that they can hide in? I would have thought they would be okay, but they do like somewhere dark to hide. You could always cover the top of the cage with an old blanket or towel if it is particularly cold at night. We have done this for our (very pampered) indoor bunny, but she is nesh and likes to live next to the radiator. Your outdoor bunnies will be made of much tougher stuff than mine.

Is the cage placed directly on the shed floor? If so, the bottom of it may become cold, so extra newspaper may be required to insulate it a bit.

Hopefully someone else with an outside bunny will come along and help you.

I'm thinking of using a wooden shed as a rabbit hutch too. I'm thinking of putting a hutch inside, left open, for the rabbits to have a cosy dark space to go into. I also want a cat flap in the side of the shed so the rabbits will have access to an outside run.

I've been looking at this website - www.rabbitrehome.org.uk - and found lots of good ideas and advice. Some of the contributors on this forum run rescue centres - I met one of them last summer when I visited a local rescue to look for a friend for my rabbit.

If you look in the housing forum I'm sure you'll find the information you need.
