We're getting a cat!

DH and I are planning to get a cat. We are very excited. We're thinking a kitten rather than a cat. Instinctively, I like the idea of a rescue kitten and am assuming there's no additional trauma with a rescue kitten vs a pedigree? Any thoughts, tips or advice gratefully received.

Congrats! All my cats are or have been from Cats Protection and they've been fab. No trauma and fewer health problems that pedigrees. Small kittens may be thin on the ground at this time of the year but do consider an older kitten.

Best of luck

we got our kitten from the CPL 6 years ago, she is healthy, smaller than the average and about 75% ferral, we didnt know she would be ferral but shes fine if you dont go near her, as a kitten she wrecked our house, was always up curtains and scratched everything.

we also got a 6year old male cat 2 years ago and he is sooo good, i would not get a kitten ever again, i would get young cat that you had some information about.

Interesting. As a child we had a young cat/old kitten that we got through some rescue scheme and he was the best cat we've ever had. So maybe that's the way forward?

My 2 most affectionate cats are a 5 yo male that I got as a 6 mth old kitten, and a 3 yo who was a 100% feral kitten that I got at about 8 weeks. She would not go anywhere near anyone at first but is now permanently on my lap or keyboard

I agree with clayre, we were on the lookout for kittens at the local RSPCA and they were all adorable of course. However , we looked at the older cats too and eventually left with a huge ginger and white 2 year old cat for my daughter.
He is brilliant. Completely litter trained, micro chipped, eats anything and doesn't mind being man handled by a 10 yearold.
Definatley go to CPL or RSPCA for your cat.
The RSPCA took care of all the jabs, micro chips and worming etc so he was all ready to go!
