If you buy dry cat (or similar) food in bulk, how do you store it?

That's it basically.

We buy large bags of dry cat food but have yet to come up with a way to store it.
Currently it sits in the corner with a peg holding it shut

Worried that a) other cats will come in the cat flap and eat from the bag leading to b) rats coming in.
(dunno if rats like cat food but if they're desperate....)

And tbh i don't like having a big bright orange bag of cat food sitting there! I want something 'tasteful'!

Did find something on a US site but nothing over here (UK).

Any tips?

In morrisons they sell large clear tubs that have a lid and a handle, about £3 i think? We use those

Tommy · 23/01/2010 21:09

ours is in an old chocolate tin - min heroes christmas special.

We did have stray cats who came in and knocked the bag off the side and spilled it all over the floor.

Mice certainly eat cat food - don't know about rats - eeeurgh

JustKeepSwimming · 23/01/2010 21:14

Thanks both of you, Tommy i think a Choc tin would be too small though?

No Morrisons handy, but could try Wilkinsons?

Was thinking something more like this
Anyone seen anything similar here?
We saw something similar in a garden centre but it had BIRD FOOD printed in huge letters on the side,...could put off the mice i suppose, lol.

We just keep ours in these bins in our storage cupboard upstairs, and just keep refilling one of those cereal storage tubs in the kitchen for easy pouring (£2 each from morrisons). Most places do them though.

How about this?

Or this - might have to get one of these myself

And here's one just like you've posted - bit pricey though!

JustKeepSwimming · 23/01/2010 21:51

Thanks so much MrsL

Yes the last one is a bit pricey!!

The TCH ones are good though, will have a proper look tomorrow.

Its in a spare bicycle basket on teh kitchen floor, because I dont know what to do with it either.
In the mornings, the cat comes and plunges his face into teh hole in the corner of the sack, until I feed him.

We have a tub with a handle which sounds like the morrisons one mentioned further up, but from pets at home. Unfortunately not quite big enough for a whole bag of cat biccys,so will be lurking here a while.

Plastic dustbin in the garage for the big sacks to stop mice paying a visit. Then decant into plastic cereal containers a la Tupperware/Addis/Freebise from ALpen.

JustKeepSwimming · 24/01/2010 20:35

Catinthehat - what kind of lid on the bin?

We do decant into a cereal tupperware style thing atm so just looking for the 'big' answer.

A plastic bin sounds like the cheapest option, as long as i'm confident that nothing else could get into it (incl my own cats, lol)

Just the bin lid, with a brick on it to stop it getting knocked off. They are big enough to hold a new sack plus the remains of the current sack as well.

Well I had to go to Ikea for other stuff today and I bought this which looks lovely and easily fits the food we had left in the bag which was nearly full.

No clip lid but I'm hoping my cats aren't that bright
