Why do dogs eat poo?

Title says it all!

My 12 week old Staff will eat her own poo if I don't get to it quick enough, my old dog (Satff cross) used to do it too.

It really is gross! Do all dogs do this?

It is really common for puppies to eat poo as this is what they have seen their mum do. Just tidying up and leaving no scent to help predators find them and keep the nest clean and hygenic.

You all sound like unfit parents to me if you do not do the same.

However most dogs will grow out of it if they do no have access to their own poo so clean up straight away. Do not make an issue out of it or chase the dog or throws things at it if it is eating poo. The dog will just wait for you not to be there and then still eat it!

Older dogs a different issue and for many reasons behavioural, medical etc.

What lovely animals we all own...

Mine do eat fox poo, but have never had the inclination to rool in it, thank goodness...

She was with her mum longer than usual with it being Christmas, so had lots of extra milk which made her nice and chunky, but she obviously also learned how to clean up poo!

Our old dog used to roll when she was out for a walk, once she rolled in something that had to be fox poo, it was the most disgusting smell I have ever smelt! Straight home and dunked straight in the bath after that walk!
She wassuch a scavenger, used to eat her own poo, the cats poo, she even ate salt dough christmas decorations that Ds had made at school, then did glittery vomit behind the arm chair!
Despite all that I still really miss her!

Mine doesn't eat his poo, but he ate all the vomit ds3 did on the floor the other day. That was cool - I'd have got a dog years ago if I'd realised I wouldn't have to wipe up vomit anymore

dogs are obviously very environmentally aware - the worlds best recyclers

My puppy eats his poo, it is totally gross!
I tried feeding him pineapple and it didn't work at all.

I tried chucking some hot sauce on the poo (after he had done it of course!) and he turned his nose up at that particular pile and the next few. He has since gone back to attempting to eat it much to my horror.

Please, please, please let him grow out of it soon! He doesn't get told off for it, but I keep my distance for some time afterwards while the smell fades!

is this a cav thing? one of my two cavs eats poo and it drives me insane....i want to cuddle him and i just cant!

Mine isn't a cav but is a spaniel.

I have invested in a doggy toothbrush and toothpaste, it comes in handy at times!

My 3 month old pup also eats his poo when he can get away with it. He did have unlimited access to his mum until we got him at 8 weeks, but isn't that normal?

We keep chickens, and he adores their leavings!
