I spent an hour today detangling Daphne, anyone have a longhaired dog and can give me some tips

on how to keep her fur from getting matted?

I use dog shampoo and conditioner once a week and brush her when I get around to it. I suspect I should be doing more brushing.

Is there a particular brush that is good for stopping her getting so matted?

Poor darling was not happy today but lay nicely and let me comb the knots out.

I think with long haired breeds you really need to be brushing every day, MmeLindt.

MmeLindt · 17/01/2010 21:10

I knew you were going to say that.

Was somehow hoping that a very clever MNetter would post a great tip about a fantastic conditioner that would magic the tuggy bits away.

Ah - you mean this stuff:

I don't want to clip her though, we go to the doggy hairdresser for that.

More expensive than my haircut.

LOL

Thanks, knew I could rely on you, Bella.

Why can't you clip her? Easy peasy

MmeLindt · 17/01/2010 21:15

Really?

I did have a go at trimming her a couple of weeks ago.

You really cannot use human hair trimmer for cutting dog hair, did you know that?

DH said her legs looked like chicken drumsticks.

Daphne

Bella32 · 17/01/2010 21:21

Seriously though....would the groomer show you how to clip the most problematic areas at least?

Bella32 · 17/01/2010 21:27

Or ask your vet nurse for some pointers.

Vet nurse efforts do tend to look like this, though:

Clip

Vet nurses do, however, pride themselves on straight edges and only clipping as much as necessary. The one in the pic gets about 3/10

MmeLindt · 17/01/2010 22:04

Ouch.

We went to one groomer and she just whizzed over Daphne with the clippers. Poor wee soul looked like a lamb. It was appropriately at Easter time.

Just spend ages googling Maltese + grooming and found this. That is one patient cat.

Wouldn't one of those tangle teasers work? That you use on children.

As you probably tell my dog is not long haired.

Bella32 · 17/01/2010 22:15

You could try something like this although tbh I don't rate them.

Loved the video - that cat was growling and the Maltese are cute, aren't they? Just like dogs, only smaller

MmeLindt · 17/01/2010 22:17

Just googled tangle teaser. Hmm, might give it a try. If it doesn't work I can use it on DD

Sorry Miss Bella. Twas Shiny wot started it, Miss.

Why do you not rate the doodah that you linked to then?

Sorry.

As I said my dog is not long haired. Dd1 is and those tangle teasers work a treat on her

I have something similar to that brush for my dog though. The local petshop/groomers reccommened it and its great. But again his hair is not especially long. I usually use dry shampoo on him if he is really matted and knotted between baths. As recommened by my vet.

Bella32 · 17/01/2010 22:34

I meant my tomfoolery

I have used them, but IMO if there are matts already there then these things are really painful to use

If used pro-actively, might be different.

HTH & will stop messing about now

MrsL123 · 17/01/2010 22:54

Have you ever tried mane detangler on her? I realise she's not a horse, but I've known it to work wonders on the scruffiest beast

Cowboy Magic is particularly, well, magic and I'm sure it'd be safe to use on dogs (it's safe for human use too and is particularly good if you run out of conditioner!). It's widely available online and all the horsey places will do it. Smells lovely too.

MrsL123 · 17/01/2010 22:57

Just looked at the FAQ's and yes, it's definitely safe to use on dogs!

MmeLindt · 18/01/2010 07:20

Thanks, MrsL. Will give that a go.

Off to make an appointment at the grooming parlour today for a trim.
