Which books are great for new puppy owners?

In anticipation of the EAD (expected arrival date ) of Ruby, I want to get swatting. I have a great book specifically about the breed (Vizsla) but am looking for a kind of "how to" guide, I suppose for puppy raising .

I have book marked a few sites that have been mentioned on threads on here but I find a book much easier to deal with

Of course, Amazon etc are awash with dog related tomes. However, what would you recommend in terms of an "idiots guide" plus anything more in-depth/dog psychology type books?

The Perfect Pupyp by Gwen Bailey covers pretty much all you need to know an dis very good. I give it to all my new owners in their puppy packs. (well, I actualyl give it to them once we have agreed they can have a pup, I suspect they'd never read it if they got the pup at the same time... 'Puppy School' also by Gwen bailey is good an dgreat if you have kids, although you might not need it if you buy the first book.

Also, The Culture Clash by Jean Donaldson is good. It's not really a training book as such, but does have some training ideas in it. It gives the basics of dog psychology and how they learn though and will give yuo a good grounding in which to problem solve yourself.

Also, 'Book Of The Bitch' by JM Evans and K White. I also give this to all my bitch owners. It covers pretty much all you need to know about owning a bitch and all related to it.

I was inseperable from my copy of the Perfect Puppy at first, would break out in a cold sweat if I couldn't see it. I got a book for Christmas called 'how to raise your puppy the guide dog way' (I think that's the title) which is good and well worth a read.

I would stick with the perfect puppy and not read too many others! They will all suggest something slightly diferent which can be mind blowing at first.

Gwen Bailey is well respected and clear to understand and her ways usually work!

I agree with Minimu re training books, but I also think it's good to have a book on dog health, common ailments, poisons etc, so I'd recommend this:

'Book Of The Bitch' - my husband would say that's the name of our wedding album lol

I really recommend this book, it has saved our skin a few times!

I found The Doglopaedia a very useful reference book at the puppy stage. Covers diet, body language, health, first aid, etc. Consulted frequently in the first year or so.

I've got a nice "me or the dog" book by Victoria Stillwell

...I got fed up of her tv shows- think the producers wanted her to Supernanny it up a bit- but the book is great
