Re-homing a stray cat and kitten

Since last May/June there has been a tabby cat who regularly visits my house and my neighbour. In the summer she disappeared and then reappeared with a little kitten. Neither have collars but didn't look neglected. Since this cold weather it is obvious they are homeless. They began sleeping under our garden table in October though not every night however with the snow they are practically living between our houses. We feed them and let them sleep overnight.

The mother is now pushing the kitten away which is normal I am told. I have called the vet to arrange to get them neutered as there is a male who follows the mother around. The vets will neuter for free but rehome them. My neighbour doesn't want to keep either and dh/myself are thinking about having one of them (we will pay for the neutering of the one we keep). We are unsure if the mother would actually stay once the weather improves as she likes being outside. They are both lovely but has anyone any advice on which would be the better choice. Any advice is appreciated.

How tame/approachable is the mother? And the kitten?

Is there an RSPCA or cat rescue place near you ? We have re homed an out door stray boy recently - he was hard work for a while but he is very happy indoors now and we adore him. Best of luck !

They are both tame and can be handled. The kitten is very friendly and can be picked up. The mother isn't too keen on being picked up but likes being stroked. Do you think we will need to keep them in for a time and if so how long. I have them both in at the moment and mum is hishing at the kitten but kitten doesn't care. Once kids are home mum cat will disappear - she likes quiet. This makes me think we should keep the kitten and rehome the mum somewhere quiet. I am really sad about this and they aren't even my cats.
