Ok guys you have ben deffo brill with the bed thread

Now please could you help with toys

7 week old Lab/retriver puppy

As she is training to be a GUIDE DOG PUPPY she must NOT have BALLS or anything that is like a ball in any way

Please tell me your puppies favourite toys and if you have used any deffo brill websites or pet shops then please tell me

Also if you have used a rubbish website

Or if you have bought a useless puppy toy that fell apart or broke easily.

I know the toys will be chewed and that I will have to keep checking them for wear and tear

My supervisor has given me some ideas for making toys so if you have made your own then please share the way you made them

Thanks guys you are soooooooooo deffo brill

This is my fave website:

British Dog

and if you enter 'fetch10' at the checkout you get 10% off.

My lab loves soft toys but they have to be fairly sturdy or they just get de-stuffed very quickly.

Derby House (saddlery) also do really good rope tuggies made from soft but very strong fleece rope.

A sock stuffed full of old socks (watch when the puppy gets older and can attack and get socks out but great for little puppies)

A tea towel tied into knots

Are they allowed to pull. The dogs I train for dogs for disabled need to tug to pull off clothing, open doors etc. If so the fleecy tugs are great.

A Puppy Kong

my goldie loves ikea soft toys - especially the spaniel puppy

Otherwise tea towels are his favourite, and empty yoghurt pots.

Our puppy loves soft toys - we've just used a couple of the kids' old ones which don't have any plastic eyes/noses.

We bought a rope toy from Aldi a few weeks ago which went down v. well.

As someone else said, puppy kongs are great.

nooka · 07/01/2010 06:24

Our pup really likes empty plastic bottles! Great fun, and can be easily taken from the recycler when no one is looking . Of the things we have bought the best were the kong on a rope thing (for tug of war and chewing) and the kong puppy frisbee (think it's called a flyer). The actual kongs have been a bit of a disappointment though as he can't get the treats out of them (he's great with bones though, so I'm not sure what the problem is)

Romanarama · 07/01/2010 07:06

mine has no interest in the puppy kong either. That was disappointing.

I always use the plastic 4 litre milk bottles either empty or filled with a bit of kibble for my litters (they do get 'proper' toys as well! ) They absolutely love the noise they make and spend ages playing with them and jumping on them.

Also, whole carrots and apples are good for chewing, but oviously make sure puppy can't swallow it and choke. (supervise) You can put these in the fridge/freezer too to help with teething a bit later on.

We get soft ducks from Pets At Home too. For some reason (maybe the texture) ours absolutely adore them.

For those who's puppies don't like kongs, have you tried filling with somethign like soft garlic cheese, peanut butter or pate? I have found one or more of thesemakes even the most dis-interested dog interested.

nooka · 07/01/2010 08:03

Our pup only seems to like things that can be licked out pretty much immediately, so the cheesywizz kong stuff is enjoyed, but the peanut butter got pushed right inside and was really gross to clean. I got some of the kong filler stuff (the sticks) and he only ate it (with great enjoyment) when it was sticking out of the kong. As soon as it was inside he totally lost interest. He'll chew at bones and lick out the marrow though.

He also likes vegetables although generally just to gnaw on for a while.

minimu · 07/01/2010 09:20

Many dogs don't like the initial rubbery smell of the kong but if you wash it loads of times first - it can go in the dishwasher and use very smelly food to start with. Dogs begin to like it. Peanut butter is quite good to get dogs going on it. The more you use it the softer it gets and less rubbery then the dogs love it more

Romanarama · 07/01/2010 12:08

OK, I tried pb and cream cheese in mine, with salami bits amongst the dog food, but he was only interested for 5 mins. I'll put it in the dishwasher for the next few loads.

Thanks for info

I am not sure about Frisbees ~ I have been wondering about them too

But my gut feeling is that it would be a no for the same reason as the balls

when they are working if they saw someone throw one they would want to chase it instead of working iyswim

I will ask on Monday
