He's ready in feb, can't wait to get him home!

Anyone have any advice for me? I've not had a cat since i was living with my parents.

Also this is probably beyond dumb but i'm looking on the pets at home website at things i need to buy, do i want clumping or non clumping litter?!

No advice but LORDY they are cute - what are you going to call him?

oopsandbabycoconut · 06/01/2010 12:58

I have 2 begals they are fab. we have 1 quitet shy one who runs from everone but is VERY vocal and one who is a lap cat who will sit on anyone who doesn't move for more than 5 seconds. We use non clumping litter as tha is what the breeder used. Also ask the breeder what food he is used to too as asudden change can lead to tummy upsets. Ours have a litter tray, scratching post and a metal water bowl which is heavy as they love water and often splash in it and tip it over.

BurningBuntingFlipFlop · 06/01/2010 13:02

Thanks for the water bowl tip!

Could do with name ideas actually, the breeder said we can give him his pedigree name.. maybe an asian type name?

Inesh - means 'strong king'
Iraja - 'born of the wind'
Jagati - 'of the universe'

I looked on this site

Iklboo · 06/01/2010 13:19

Also Jahangir - means 'conqueror of the world'

clayre · 06/01/2010 13:22

my mums is called Prince Harry (thats the name on his documents) she calls him spotty, he is soooo gorgeous, but a pain in the arse!

YouKnowNothingoftheCrunch · 06/01/2010 13:24

We've got a bengal. He is the best cat I have ever owned. In fact he is much more like a dog than a cat. He likes to hang about with me during the day and plays with dogs (no time for other cats). He even comes on walks with us.

I don't think I could ever go back to having any other type.

If you are getting a male then I recommend having him neutered as soon as possible. I do know on guy with a full Tom bengal who has murdered every other Tom in a 10 mile radius

But I think neutered males are the friendliest (might be biased )

bubblerock · 06/01/2010 13:25

My kitten is part bengal and she's a looney!! But very cute

oopsandbabycoconut · 06/01/2010 13:27

YKNOTC - our male is also just like a dog it's the female who is vocal and a scardeycat!

Ours are called Olympic (Born on the first day of the olympics) and Floriana and have their breeder prefix on the front. They are known as pod and flo. Our breeder stated in her contract that Olympic was to be neutered by 6 months.

YouKnowNothingoftheCrunch · 06/01/2010 13:28

Oh and prepare for the first year to be an utter nightmare! Mine was such a pain as a kitten, tore things to pieces, peed everywhere (even when mostly trained), got into EVERYTHING, and his favourite game was to climb up my legs (whether trousered or bare!).

As a cat he is perfect. As a kitten?

Bella32 · 06/01/2010 13:30

Congrats

Bella32 · 06/01/2010 13:31

I find clumping much better at containing smells. OkoPlus is the best one, imho.

With clumping litter you remove the wee - non-clumping only allows you to remove the poos.

HTH

YouKnowNothingoftheCrunch · 06/01/2010 13:31

oops it's good to hear he's not a one off in temperment. My sister owns his mother and aunt and they are much more nervous and unfriendly than mine.

brewhaha · 06/01/2010 14:16

I was thinking about a bengal cat? What are they like to own? Someone said they are very noisy and miaow a lot - is that what you have all found?
Also, congrats to the op! I'm jealous!!
Could I ask where you are getting it, would you recommend the breeder? Or where is a good place to try to find one? What colour are you getting? (I see you can get them in different colours - opinion poll: which colour do people think is best - white, silver, or brown?)

BurningBuntingFlipFlop · 06/01/2010 14:29

brewhaha the breeder is near manchester, Silverpride. They were recommended to me through a friend of friend, they seem like a lovely couple and have been really helpful.

My kitten is a rosetted brown one, personally i prefer the look of them but silver ones are gorgeous too.

Brew - We have a noisy female and a quiet male. MIL had a female too and she was noisy as well so it may well only be the females. They are highly intelligent cats and need stimulation or can get very mischievious and destructive as kittens but grow up into still cheeky but more quiet adults. They love water and will climb anything even your bare legs! We have a spotty brown male and a stripy brown female they are brother and sister but from different litters.

brewhaha · 06/01/2010 14:43

Thank you BBF and oops- will google!
They are such stunning looking cats!
I hope you enjoy your little bundle when it arrives!

I have a male bengal and he is an absolute star. I don't know what they are like as kittens because we got ours at 2 years old from a rescue centre. As an adult he is gorgeous! Very affectionate, will come sit on my knee or lay with me in bed and sleep snuggled up to me (aar!). He loves climbing as others have said. When my DH comes in from work he jumps up to his shoulder for a cuddle. He also does the water scooping thing with his bowl.

Ours is an indoor cat,we have built a large cage for him to go out when the weather is nice, it's got lots of things for him to climb up etc. The thing is he is desperate to go out on his own. He has escaped many a time and we have been running around the street chasing him! We daren't let him go on his own because they have a reputation for roaming and we are frightened he wouldn't come back because they love to explore. Couldn't bare it if we lost him.

Ours isn't that vocal thank god! He has a little chunter to himself but he isn't as vocal as some are.

As for the cat litter, ask the breeder which type they used and stick to that at first and then if you want to change it you can introduce it gradually. Ours used to use non-clumping in the rescue place but we now use clumping. It is great. Can get wees out dead easy and it does control the smells better.

We have a large scratch post which he uses religiously. He has never even attempted to scratch any furniture. the only thing he does sometimes have a go at is a rug i have in my room. But overall he is very good with scratching and litter etc. He is very mischievious though but that's what i love about him!

Anyway i've rambled on enough! Good luck with your ickle kitten! You will fall in love with it instantly! Have fun!

oopsandbabycoconut · 06/01/2010 15:53

Wiggleit - Ours is an indoor cat too and sounds exactly like yours! We have an airlock system in our house to stop him excaping into the woods where I know he will kill anything in sight and then not some back! He was our substitute baby before we had DD and now they are best friends she drags him around by his tail or carries him under his arms and he never protests. I often find them snuggling on the floor where she has made a nest for them.

wiggleit · 06/01/2010 16:09

oops - aar! Our DD makes dens too in her bedroom (she is 9) and our bengal just loves it under there with her. He loves his comfort! x
