RTKangaSANTAMummy · 05/01/2010 19:15

Cos we get our Guide Dog Puppy next week and so I am wanting recommendations for a bed

What kind of bed or rug have you got?

The puppy will be just over 7 weeks old and is a LAB/RETRIVER CROSS

So will be quite small

Also will be sleeping in a crate

Thanks

We got a pup on Saturday, she has a large cushion in her crate, she loves it in there, takes herself in when she's tired!

fruitshootsandheaves · 05/01/2010 21:38

mine have a really cheap cut up duvet in a cover from the market.
Once they were older and not so chewy they got a more expensive fatter cushion type bed from Pets at Home

Vet bed - it's lovely stuff as any accidents soak straight through and it dries really fats after washing.

Two 7 week old puppies here - they're on an old beanbag covered with a bath mat.

No cage but lots of old newspaper and cardboard...

Thanks for all the great ideas

When my pup was tiny (8 weeks and 3.5 kilos)I used a biggish vet bed in a cardboard box with one of the sides cut down so she could get in and out, I put this inside her crate.

I wanted her to have the sides around her(which had the vet bed up them) for warmth and privacy iyswim, but didn't want to keep spending loads of money on bigger dog beds - 5mths later and she is 22kilos!

RTKangaSANTAMummy · 05/01/2010 23:46

I had been thinking about going down the cardbaord box with 3 sides route

I had been also thinking about the puppy eating or chewing the bedding and how safe it would be at nightime when left alone

vet bed is pretty tough, cardboard box (in our case) didn't get too badly ripped up until she was bigger - by then I felt she didn't really need the cosiness of the sides and she went onto vet bed on top of a cushiony thing.

Piffle · 06/01/2010 08:12

Vetbed is unchewable too
we have two dogs 12mths and 4 mths. Rhodesian ridgebacks.
Vetbed washes in no time, dries fast and is invaluable. Try and a non slip on if you can to line the crate with otherwise when the run in they skid ( funny but not iyswim)
how lovely for you kanga
deffo brill news ;)

A soft crate with loads of blankets in. He is a terrier and needs a safe place to hide from dd2 when he is sleeping.

minimu · 06/01/2010 09:03

Vetbed in a cardboard box until they are bigger. Then see how the lie somelike flat beds so they can lie flat out, others like round beds that they can curl into.
I always use the plastic beds with a vet bed blanket or a thicker bedding depending on the dog.

Bella32 · 06/01/2010 09:54

Wouldn't dream of giving a puppy a proper bed - they just adore pulling the stuffing out

Vetbed, vetbed, vetbed. Old charity shop towels as back up. Nothing that cannot be thrown straight in the wash after inevitable accidents in early days

MmeLindt · 06/01/2010 09:57

What is a vet bed?

I just used old fleece blankets, we had them around the house as she likes to follow me around.

I bought her a dog bed eventually, she has never chewed it.

Bella32 · 06/01/2010 10:02

vetbed

Sort of a superior faux sheepskin which doesn't hold moisture. washes & dries in a flash, and is very cushioned.

MmeLindt · 06/01/2010 10:26

That looks good, Bella. Going to order one for under my desk.

Piffle · 06/01/2010 10:42

worth sourcing a crate divider for a young small pup.
Accidents are not inevitable if you are on the ball and crate train properly
Neither of mine have had accidents more than once or twice and always on hard floor by the door (my mistake not seeing them needing to go out)

Bella32 · 06/01/2010 11:08

Thanks for that,Piffle

I've crate trained a hell of a lot more than 2 pups, and I can assure you I am always on the ball and I always do it correctly.

MistleSnail · 06/01/2010 11:50

You are always going to get accidents with puppies....esp ones so young they are really just babies.

And if you change their diet etc...

RTKangaSANTAMummy · 06/01/2010 16:47

My guide dog puppy supervisor was supposed to come today with all the equipment and paperwork but she is snowed in so rang me and said I should get a cardboard box and some towels or blankets for the bed

So I will start off with old towels or blankets and then invest in a vet bed when I see the size of the crate she is bringing me.

Thanks guys for all your help

You are all deffo brill

I wouldn't give a puppy a nice bed - wait until they're fully toilet trained. Mine had cheap rigid plastic ones as puppies with various cheap fleecy blankets or old towels to make them a bit more comfortable.

Now older, my springer has a Bia Bed. With fleecy cover in winter, without in summer. Very easy to clean and really comfortable.

RTKangaSANTAMummy · 06/01/2010 18:29

Thanks for info

My pup has a thin fake furry bed thing, but mostly sleeps on the sofa dh bought him a very soft fleecy blanket for Christmas and he gets wrapped up in that at night (it's very cold here, and he seems to sleep better tucked up!)

Once he's grown up a bit I'm gong to try and find a big bed with a nice head rest (my mother made nice wooden beds for our family dogs, lined with carpet, so that's what is in my mind I guess - not seen anything vaguely like it as beanbags/cushions are the in thing here)
