Urine sample from an uncooperative dog

At the end of my vet appointment today he mentioned I should bring in a urine sample and I have a wee container thing to fill. I didn't think at the time about the practicalities of collecting the sample...

He is a male dog, legs are not that long and it is hard to get under him when he pees. I have designated a small tray for this purpose but as soon as I approach him with it he stops peeing and gets out my way (he is a rescue dog and a bit suspicious). I tried laying the tray at the bottom of a favourite tree and then stood there for ages as he sniffed and walked around it but he didn't go for it.

Would it be okay do you think to just pack the tube with "yellow snow" and letting it melt or will the cold have killed off any bugs?

No I doubt yellow snow will be ok.

Try using a foil tray (like the ones you get from takeaways) If it is large enough you don't need to get too close to the dog.

Good Luck keep him on a lead and approach from behind! You only need a small sample so fingers crossed for you!
