Poorly dog - Tummy bug?

Tues, Weds, Thurs the dog was sick.

Tues, Out in the garden for 10 mins, he came in, vomited up a fair bit plus grass.

Weds, Out in the garden (morning routine) came in, vomited.

Thurs, Fed him, out in garden, came in, vomited what looked like the whole amount he'd just eaten.

I called the vet and was asked to bring him in that afternoon, when I got there I was asked to wait outside because they suspected he may have had the deadly parvo virus, it's apparently doing the rounds When it was his turn to be seen I had to carry the 30+kg dog through to the vet, he checked him all over, thinks he has some kinda tummy bug. So, he gave him an injection, I think to rehydrate him? And some sachets to put in his water, dog at this rate is looking really depressed, I got home, gave him fresh water and put the sachet in, he won't touch it at all.

Took him out for a small walk, vet said not to walk him cos he won't be feeling great, but I thought it might help/make him drink when he gets home, he poo'd twice (which was great as he hadn't for 3 days) and had a little run with his ball. Got home, still he hasn't touched his water, I gave him another bowl as well of plain water and he's not touched that either ...? I gave him water at 4pm, done a line on the bowl with a perm. marker to see if he'd drank any. Got home at 6pm, nothing. He hasn't drank since I've been in either.

Do I wait it out, he said not to feed him for a day or so and when I do to feed him bland stuff, chicken, ham etc (what he eats anyway).

Any ideas?

How about wetting his nose/lips with some of the water just to give him the taste?
I know my dog loves to lick wet hands!

Hope he gets better soon, its just as bad as one of the kids being ill isn't it.

My dog got into his food cupboard last night, (kids left it slightly open) and he had the time of his life helping himself to biscuits. He paid for it later though with tummy ache and lots of wind and poo!
He is all better now though.

Claire2009 · 01/01/2010 23:34

I tried that, he just refuses, sits down and paws me as if to say "NO"

Not sure what else to do, can't force him to drink?

LOL at your dog, what breed is he?

He is a staff, such a cheeky little thing helping himself like that. I wonder how much longer he would have gone on eating had I not heard him!
He had a huge pot belly for about an hour until it all came out the other end. He really cried too, hopefully taught himself a valuably lesson.

Wonder if your dog would like the water if it had a bit of sugar in it or something?
Poor thing, sounds like you will need to phone the vet again.

Claire2009 · 01/01/2010 23:40

Haha, probably would've continued until he couldn't carry anymore!! Hopefully he's learnt his lesson now!

Will try sugar, anythings worth a shot at the moment, will call vet if he's no better in the morning.

Thankyou

just had another thought, how about giving him an ice cube to lick?
My dog loves that but then again, he is a bit of a loon at times

Claire2009 · 01/01/2010 23:47

Thanks! Will try that too, he's a quiet (some would say boring!) dog anyway (6 in March, border collie cross) but will go downstairs and try bribe him to drink/take ice/anything! How old is your dog?

7 months. We've have had him for about 4 months now, he has settled so well after a worrying hyper start!
He is so lovely, really glad we got him.

Tabithacat · 01/01/2010 23:53

Try using a syringe to squirt it in his mouth. Maybe you have one from kids medicines?

Then no food for 24 hours then only plain boiled rice and maybe a bit of chicken.

Good luck, horrible when they're poorly because they can't tell you anything.

Claire2009 · 02/01/2010 00:05

socute, how lovely, sounds like he's got a great home with you

Tabithacat, I've just tried the icecubes, and water with sugar, will try the syringe now, didn't even think of that, thanks!

Call the vet - you need to let them know that he still isn't drinking as they can go downhill very quickly if they don't. The injection the vet gave won't rehydrate him - that would have been a drug. It takes litres of fluid to rehydrate a 30kg dog.

BellasSparklyBaubles · 02/01/2010 20:17

How is he doing?

socute · 02/01/2010 23:02

I hope he has either started drinking or that the vet has been able to see him again.

Claire2009 · 02/01/2010 23:20

He drank today! Sorry just online now, he was looking for food at about midday so I fed him, and then he drank two big bowls of water, then went in the garden

His eyes are looking red (where they're supposed to be white) and he's still a bit sad looking but seeing as he's had a fair bit of water & small amounts of food I think he's on the up?

Tried the syringe last night, got a bit in but he just kept pawing me.

sounds like good news to me. Really glad he seems to be making progress, bet you are glad too!

Claire2009 · 02/01/2010 23:32
