I heart Haltis

Right. Minimu's going to come kick my butt for not having got my loose lead walking sorted yet, but hear me out
I am working diligently on clicker training my pup to walk on a loose lead but she's young and strong and still lunges towards exciting things. On ice this is not good
So, while I am awaiting delivery of a dogmatic headcollar I rummaged around in my doggy tack room and found a halti to fit her. I hadn't used one for several years and I had forgotten just how good they are - I can hold her with just two fingers!
I know that haltis etc do not teach a dog to walk on a loose lead, but for anyone struggling on ice at the moment I highly recommend them.
Over and out, gals

P.S. My older dogs walk really nicely on a loose lead, Minimu

my ddog pulled me off my feet today on a slippy bit Halti looking vv attractive.

what is the doggy headcollar thing? also am in awe of being able to click whilst attempting to wrestle mad hound to heel, or is that just me?

loondog has almost reverted to normal, was obviously just traumatised by my absence and not being fabulously well behaved on her return from gundog chap.

Today, mortifyingly, she did a recall to a springers whistle on the beach while defiantly ignoring my frantic peeping.

How are you m'dear?

BellasSparklyBaubles · 31/12/2009 09:42

Perhaps her auditory anatomy is more closely aligned to that of a springer? Am sure she did not mean to ignore you Actually I have been reading how brain scans have shown that, with sufficient distractions, a dog genuinely cannot hear you. Bless.

We are all very well thank you - despite old girl having given a very convincing 24 hour performance of I May Be Nearing The End Now. Perky as a perky thing today. My main prob is that broadband is up the Swanee so a) cannot link you to Dogmatic (but google should work) and b) my pesky phone is making a mockery of my pedantic grammar with its over zealous corrections. It threw in an it's where an its should have been on another thread (I would go back and point it out but it's a very serious thread) and apple seem convinced that there is only one form of Reading - a town in Berkshire
How are you & yours?

Happy New Year, Bedlam - and lol at you and your loonsville pup It is quite hard for us crazy dog women to contain our enthusiasm sometimes, isn't it? I was bouncing round the kitchen with excitement when my dogmatic arrived in the post - only 24 hours after speaking to the very lovely dogmatic lady who was so helpful with sizing - and I got some back issues of a behaviour journal in the same delivery, so Bella was beside herself
The ice cleats are good, aren't they? They have saved my rump on numerous occasions over the last fortnight. DH pees himself gazes in awe as I get togged up these days, but it's worth it!

I heart haltis too

although just twist and loop slip lead over my springer's nose when necessary as halti and gentle leader and canny collars all come off - obviously he heels beautifully OFF the lead in the middle of nowhere where nobody ever sees or admires us

Bella32 · 04/01/2010 22:05

We believe you, Mitchy

Bella32 · 04/01/2010 22:06

Did you get anywhere with the dog that was guarding, btw?

MitchyInge · 04/01/2010 22:18

um it is on and off

not always guarding, sometimes excitement at beginning or end of walk and he grabs wrist or ankle quite hard - like they might do to another dog to flip them over in play? bruises though

but then he'll go for several days being impeccably behaved and charming so at moment am trying to establish whether any sort of pattern exists

will be living with him for a while towards end of month and will be interested to see if he does it when he has me 'on tap' so to speak

nice of you to ask

Bella32 · 04/01/2010 22:32

That's okay - just wondered how it was all panning out.

Keep us posted

Aw, bless

As I keep saying, if only dh's were as easy to train as dogs.

Or as handsome

Piffle · 06/01/2010 10:46

i adore the dogmatic as well
Our ridgie girl is 12 mths and has always been highly excitable around other dogs and new people... Pain in the ass we show her and her behaviour has got worse
Having addressed it as an anxiety issue, we decided to be able to control her would be more reassuring so the dogmatic saved my shoulders!

FWIW she walks loose lead perfectly until she sees another dog

It is just her, our 16 week old pup is so calm it is not funny in comparison

luckyblackcat · 14/01/2010 17:23

Belaa, what size did you got for? I've gone for a 3 but actually think it may be wrong - did chat to them re fitting, but she is just a funny shape at the mo

Bella32 · 14/01/2010 18:37

Pup is a 2, lab boy is a 3L. From memory I think pup was 9.5 inches round muzzle, and 14 to 16 inches round neck (her neck tapers markedly). I've had to punch a couple of holes but it fits very well - for now anyway;-) I would suspect my pup is finer in the face than yours.

Bella32 · 14/01/2010 18:41

p.s. Lab boy's head is HUGE

The very nice Dogmatic lady said she'd be happy to exchange as long as packaging okay. Oh, and I got the cushioned webbing ones - the sizes come up differently for the different types, don't they?

luckyblackcat · 14/01/2010 18:52

Thanks, yes I went for leather

Bella32 · 14/01/2010 19:08

Yes, I googled gundog leads when you first said that - I have several in my collection: we call them slip leads in these parts. I don't use them these days - could have sent you a rather fetching white one with black spots

DH is always laughing at our pups ears too - especially when she is sitting outside with the breeze blowing them horizontally and aft. 'Mind you don't take off', he says

Dogmatics do the job though - honest. Not a substitute for loose lead training, but htye do the job.

Am surprised you didn't pop into gloat on my Recall! thread, though....
