My cat is always hungry

She is 15 and has an illness.

She can be asking for tea from 3 onwards. She was fed abbout 40 minutes ago and is still shouting for something. She has been like this for a while so I am wondering if there is something wrong or linked to her illness or maybe she is just a greedy pussy cat.

Her illness is hypoestesias and I know very little about it, same with my vet.

Our elderly cat was always hungry.
Turned out to be an overactive thyroid.
It was controlled effectively with medication.

Oh heck.

I guess a trip to the vet then?

Are there any other symptoms to look out for?

My cat had overactive thyroid as well as constantly pestering for food she seemed to regress into kitten like behaviour and developed a louder purr ?!

msrisotto · 27/12/2009 17:08

Worms?

NorbertDentressAngel · 27/12/2009 17:11

Our cat was diagnosed with thyroid problems when she was about 13 -always hungry and always eating but not at all fat. She also had a strange cough.

Shes as mad as a box of frogs anyway so I'm not sure I'd have noticed a regression to kitten like behaviour though.

How would I know if it is worms?

She is a big girl, has been since she was neutered.

FAB - Merry Christmas, honey

You need to get your cat checked out by the vet - there are several conditions that can cause this, and the sooner she gets seen the easier it'll be to treat her.
Worms won't make a cat ravenously hungry - that's a bit of an old wives' tale - but all cars need worming, ideally every 3 months. Use a wormer from your vet as pet shop ones contain ineffective drugs and can upset their tummies. Worms do not usually produce any noticeable symptoms.

HTH & keep us posted x

I will keep an eye on her. She gets so upset when going to the vet that I really don't want to take her if i don't have too.

When my kitty had worms she pood a lot, had runny poos, little whie bits in her poos, white bits around her bum and she rubbed her bum along the carpet cos it was itchy.
Hope you figure it out, hugs to your kitty!

She definitely doesn't have worms then.

my mum's cat was diabetic and was always starving and thirsty.

FabHasHadALovelyXmas · 28/12/2009 17:35

She doesn't seem to drink much and that worries me too.
