MIL's old dog, looks likely that she is going to pass away in the next few days, from old age . When it does happen, what do we do with her when she does? Can she call the PDSA to come take the dog away?

you can contact your local Vets. there is a charge but you can request the ashes if you would like.

sorry

Does she have a garden where she could bury the dog herself? Lots of people do this. It's a nice way to say goodbye to a much loved pet.

Is the dog suffering now do you think? Perhaps it ought to be seen by a vet now?

LadyOfTheFlowers · 24/12/2009 21:36

MILs elderly dogs have both passed away in the last few months.

She found both to be unusually affectionate in their last day before they died.

you can take her to the vet and they will cremate it for you. There is a charge but imo is better than burying the body in your garden. If you want you can have the ashes back to bury/scatter/do as you feel fit. Sorry to be morbid but imo this is better than burying the body, esp if it is a big dog you will have to dig a massive hole and that won't be pleasant for anyone.

I had to have my dog put to sleep two weeks ago tomorrow and we chose to have her cremated and have the ashes back. We are going to bury them in the spring and plant a rose bush (with a similar name to her) over the top as a memory.

Why do you think she is going to die soon? Is she suffering? Perhaps it would be kinder to get the vet to come out and help to let her go gently?

5inthesleighbed · 24/12/2009 22:06

Not sure if she is suffering or not. She is 17 years old, deaf, has cataracts and arthritis, so hard to tell.

She has been off her food for the past week, Vets saw her Monday and said just to try different foods.

MIL reluctant to call vet out, wants to wait until the morning to see how she is. MIL is very old and set in her ways.

Sorry about your dog Wannabe. A friend of mine had her dog turned into a diamond when he died.

often when they stop eating that is a sign that they are ready to go.

I just had a look at the website to have a pet made into a diamond and the cheapest ones are over three grand! Think a rose bush will have to suffice.

5inthesleighbed · 24/12/2009 22:43

They are taking her to the vets now

Bloody hell, three grand! I could think of better things to waste spend that amount of money on.

i too had my dog put down 2 weeks ago

i couldnt have faced burying her in the garden.

it was the kindest thing to do i believe, putting her to sleep, but it was and still is, tortuous

Sorry to hear about your MIL's dog.

She is doing the kindest thing for her to take her to the vets. We owe it to our pets to make the hardest decision when they cannot. She is very brave, and her dog will not be suffering any more.

Well she was put down last night. Poor thing had liver and kidney failure. RIP Sheba x
