Please bring them inside slarty. I had a guinea pig that died from the cold (he too had been in the shed with tons of straw, sharing with another GP etc) - they are not designed for our climate when it's like this.

SlartyBartFast · 23/12/2009 10:05

it is horrible isnt it?

i may have to give it consideration.

We used to put the gp's in the garage, then bought them in the house for a runaround for an hour or so each day, just to stretch their little legs and to keep up socialisation.

SlartyBartFast · 23/12/2009 15:59

i am not sure about the floor, but they sit on a lap for a bit,
i wonder if the worst of the weather has passed now?

I've brought the bunny in from the eglu to the kitchen

he doesn't look too chuffed tbh

but he's over 11 years old and I'm not having him die from the cold - I'd hate myself for that

Our pigs are indoor and they are ridiculously social would v.recommend it. They wheek as soon as we come in the front door, very sweet.

We got our guineas last week after promising their 'mum' that we would keep them inside whilst it was frosty. They are just so sweet, don't smell at all and talk to each other all the time. We are just smitten with them!

nickytwotimes · 23/12/2009 16:52

SLarty, I used to keep my guinea pigs in an indoor cage in the winter and they were so sociable and not scared of us at all.

They will keep each other company, but I kind of feel that i have a pet/pets to be part of the family, so prefer them inside a good deal of the time.

I am sure they are happy enough, especially if they enjoy a lap-cuddle. It is really cold this year though, so I might be tempted to err on the side of caution.

Blondeshavemorefun · 23/12/2009 20:07

aww - no squeaking prob means they are cold - bring inside for a few weeks till warmer

whispywhisp · 25/12/2009 16:25

Bring them indoors. Its less lonely for them and they will be warmer.

silver73 · 25/12/2009 18:55

Please bring the dear little piggies in from the cold - being cold is not good for them and they sound depressed which is not good for their health. They are very sociable little creatures.

We brought ours in years ago and they never left. They are absolutely gorgeous and I'm smitten with mine too. You can't get to know them properly when they are outside...

Let us know when you've brought them inside.

whispywhisp · 26/12/2009 16:17

slartybartfast - did you bring your pigs indoors?

SlartyBartFast · 27/12/2009 12:15

when the shed is open and i go in the garden i do hear them squak.
have looked at indoor cages, that is what i need isnt it?
and thought of a place to put them.
also think since the weather must surely be getting milder they have been through the worst of the weather ??

The forecast here (Hants) is more cold weather - snow/ice - again this week...also said in the papers yesterday that this cold snap is likely to continue until atleast February.

You can get a 2nd hand indoor cage on ebay for about £30 or you can buy one new from Pets at Home (for example) for about £40.

I would definitely bring them in whilst it is as cold as it is...and it certainly isn't going to get any milder just get - we're still only in December.

whispywhisp · 27/12/2009 13:40

sorry...that should've said 'just yet'

SlartyBartFast · 27/12/2009 14:02

thanks whispy

LOL ruby. I was thinking the same thing about my piggy today (currently single as her DP died in the summer). And she makes less mess than my pre-schoolers.

Mine is living in a large cat carrier under the dining room table but the door is open all day so she can scamper about. She was in the shed until the snow arrived, I'll keep her in until spring now.

mrsdisorganised · 27/12/2009 14:24

Ours live inside all year, they are spoilt and we are always tripping over the cage, they are happy!!! Our first Guinea pig was kept outside during the day and inside at night, died very young and I feel that it was the daytime cold that killed him

Bring them in, they'll be tamer too...

DavidTennantIsMyLoveSlave · 27/12/2009 14:47

January/February are normally colder than December (IME and IMO; hsven't actually looked up the figures).

DavidTennantIsMyLoveSlave · 27/12/2009 14:49

(have now looked up figures and January/February are generally colder than December)

SlartyBartFast · 27/12/2009 20:00

i might try freecycle tomorrow, or ebay, which i have never tried
