Could someone knowledgeable about dogs please tell me that I don't need to take my dog to the vets...?

I came down this morning to find my poor dog had been sick and had diarrhoea in the night. There was some blood in the diarrhoea

He was feeling very sorry for himself. When he went outside into the garden, we tried to watch him as he went to the toilet, couldn't quite see him but DH had a look later and in the snow there looks like more diarrhoea and blood.

He went out for his walk happy as larry, bit more diarrhoea with blood and sick again when he got home.

We can't think of anything he might have eaten. He only had his normal dry food and a bit of my posh beefburger (posh as in nice meat rather than v cheap burger that might have been more likely to have had all sorts of rubbish in it.) Of course it's possible he managed to quickly snaffle something on his walk yesterday, but nothing obvious.

He has had this once before. We were away on holiday for a week, he was staying with our dog walker, had diarrhoea with blood, she rang the vet and he ended up in the veterinary hospital on a drip

Do we need to take him to the vet? He does seem perfectly happy now. Obviously if he needs to go I will take him, but I'd rather not unless it's necessary, for his own benefit, as he will hate it. If it's just something he ate and he will be fine in a day or two I don't want to put him through any unnecessary trauma. I'm also conscious that our dog walker would have been ultra-cautious.

Any help much appreciated.

What was the reason when he had it before? Have to say if it was my dog I would go to the vet's unless it was a simple explanation last time (can't think what). Ime it is unusual for vets to over intervene.

I don't think they found a reason tbh, although I think a virus was mentioned as a possibility, especially as he was staying with other dogs at the time.

You're probably right, I should take him shouldn't I?

ou could ring the vets for advice, but they will probably just tell you to go in anyway.

I would worry about it getting worse and then you'll end up paying an emergency call rate over Christmas. Hope he's okay.

Better safe than sorry. Speaking as a vet the one thing that tells me he should be checked out is that you said he was feeling sorry for himself. The fact also is that this is ongoing, not just one episode of blood in the diarrhoea.

I'm sure he will be fine, but please take him.
(Also agree - better than emergency fees over Christmas!)

thanks all. He's got an appointment for 7.30pm. Fingers crossed it's nothing to worry about but you're all right, he needs to be checked out.

Remember my doggy having this - it was gastro enteritis poor boy.
Hope yours is feeling better soon

IMoveTheStarsForChristmas · 22/12/2009 20:21

how is he?

flowerytaleofNewYork · 22/12/2009 23:17

He has got a temperature, she has given him some antibiotics and we have to go back in on Christmas Eve to make sure it has all cleared up.

As per usual, as soon as we got in the vets, he acted as though everything was fine and nothing was wrong with him - making eyes at the veterinary nurses and receptionist, you know the score. So, clearly not too ill then!

Thanks everyone for the advice and concern.
