Farting Puppy!

DaisymooSteiner · 21/12/2009 23:59

Our 10 week old puppy is a bit of a stinker and keeps letting off really stinky farts, particularly in the evening. Is it worth trying a change in food - he's currently on James Wellbeloved? Don't know whether some brands are better/worse for wind? He doesn't have much else in the way of treats etc, just the odd bit of chicken/pate in his kong, but doesn't particularly seem to be related to that. He seems happy and healthy otherwise. Poo looks normal from my limited experience of puppy poo.

Any suggestions (other than a peg for my nose!)

yes we've found different food worked for a while however our dog is epileptic and we've found his medicine makes him fart now!!

Are the quantities you're feeding him correct? It might be worth double checking.

My guess is the pate though - if it's human pate. It's a very rich, complex (and salty) food for a tiny pup to digest. My adult dogs would struggle. Frozen gravy might be a better solution? Or cheese spread?

Try cutting it out and see if it has any impact.

BellasSparklyBaubles · 22/12/2009 09:16

I'd cut out the pate too.
As an aside (sort of) are you worming him every fortnight?

DaisymooSteiner · 22/12/2009 09:22

Yes, he's being wormed fortnightly. BTW, is it necessary for this to be done at the vet's? Took him for his second lot of vaccinations & microchipping at the weekend and she wormed him too and said to bring him down every month for it. Seems an expensive way of doing it when we could do it at home. Any thoughts?

Will try cutting out the pate (was a tiny amount spread inside the kong and not every day either) and see if that helps.

Thanks.

Doesn't have to be done at the vets - only problem is that it's done by body weight and of course they grow very quickly at this age so will need a completely different dose next time.

Should be possible to pop in to have him weighed (free of charge) and pick up the wormer at the same time. Don't use pet shop wormers - they are not effective and can really upset their tummies.

and they whiff

BellasSparklyBaubles · 22/12/2009 18:55

No wonder the ozone layer's almost gone

mulledfruitshootandcheese · 22/12/2009 18:57

Which flavour of James Wellbeloved are you on? My dogs were more farty on the chicken...or was it the lamb...oh dear....try changing it anyway!

DaisymooSteiner · 22/12/2009 19:03

Think it's chicken he's on. No pate today and he's still whiffy!!

Thanks Bella, wouldn't use pet shop wormers, we've got some puppy/kitten wormer we got from the vets when we had a kitten so was planning to use that if it's still in date!

Our brown lab puppy does farts that blister the paintwork, and it doesn't seem to make any difference what we feed her (or what she steals).

Look on the bright side though - you'll never have to own up to a fart ever again!

aJumpedUpPantryBoy · 22/12/2009 19:15

PantryDog1 had this problem, she could clear a room. It didn't matter what she ate, we tried about 4 different foods but she remained a windbag-extraordinaire.
We now use this and the problem has stopped.

StayingSantasGirl · 22/12/2009 19:20

I've made a note of that site, PantryBoy, and I'll show it to dh later - for the dog, that is, not dh!

BellasSparklyBaubles · 22/12/2009 19:47

OP - Panacur paste by any chance? That'll do nicely

DaisymooSteiner · 22/12/2009 20:04

Have been blaming the kids for years StayingSantasGirl!

Yup, it's Panacur
