Anyone else struggling to walk their dogs on the ice?

As soon as I step out of the door I have to walk with them on a sheet of ice for about 20 minutes before I can let them off in a field. Bloody difficult and a miracle I have not fallen flat on my face.

You need these:

ice cleats

I only have to walk a few before I get to the grassy, muddy - but not icy - park. But those few feet are hell. I spend much it on my bottom.

I also have dd2, who hates the snow and refuses to leave the house unless she is in her buggy with a quilt, hat, scarf, gloves, two caots and her rain cover. Buggies do not go well in the snow, particularly when you have an over excited mutt, who hasn't learnt to heal yet pulling you along.

I am PMSL at the high heels with ice cleats on - they look like some kind of kinky/fetish shoe

I'm so happy about the snow - I took my puppy out today, as figured that 15cm of snow would be a pretty good barrier for anything nasty and infectious. He evening came sledging in my jacket!

Oh, I thought you meant struggling to get your dogs to walk on the ice. Our dachshund was picking his way very carefully along the canal towpath on friday, the grass was lightly snowed and frozen into spikes. Poor little paws!

Not enough here to see how he copes when its up to his belly yet

BellasSparklyBaubles · 20/12/2009 20:43

lol, Bedlam.

I have actually asked Santa for some of these:

Seal Skinz but not sure if they'll pass the dog walker's test.

I shall probably still end up holding my gloves in my teeth while I attempt to unpeel a poo bag in the dark, like the rest of us

I do not do the high heels and ice cleats though

Grimma - you need one of these:

dachshund gear

Bedlam - oh dear. Might I suggest 99p 'magic' gloves widely available from tack shops?

My Dad just told me his friends wife just broke her leg walking the dog and falling

gegs73 · 21/12/2009 19:18

Mine has not been walked the last couple of days . I tried to walk to the top of our road yesterday 4 min walk and it took me about 10 mins. Husband did it and fell over twice! He pulls quite alot as well so if I took ice skates could be ok [hmmm]

ilovemydogandmrobama · 21/12/2009 19:22

I thought they were for the dogs too! Who on earth walks the dog in heels

Absolutely diabolical this afternoon. DD (3) slipping with DS (22 months) in buggy that was meant for smooth pavement, and DD (darling dog ) sliding all over the place. First front paws lost their, um, footing, and then slid backwards. Once we got to the park though it was fine.

Sorry about friend's wife EVye

I got stuck in a snow drift this morning and had to use my dog to pull me out.

GooberChev · 21/12/2009 19:30

My Boxer thinks all the snow must be eaten. She pulls more in this weather, which is handy.

mulledfruitshootandcheese · 21/12/2009 19:43

mine go nuts in the snow they love it. However it is funny watching my springer trying to sniff out his ball when I throw it, it's obviously not ideal for scent work!!

My collie takes herself off out to play football by herself in the garden...strange dog!

GrimmaTheNome · 21/12/2009 21:08

Proper snow here today - the little chap enjoyed bounding through it at high speed - and then retiring inside to bask by a radiator while we carried on playing outside.

This evening the slush outside the back door froze solid so when I called him back inside his usual high-speed dash ended up as a skid into the back doorstep... lucky his head is like a cannonball!

I just took Tizzy out and fell on my arse!! LOL.

Poor ol' Tiz didn't know what to do with me while I'm sat there laughing my head off she was looking to see what had attacked me!!
