Do they, does she, will she? I'd know what to do the kids in this weather but the puppy, um???

Coat, hat, booties, tinsel?

Cut walks to 5 mins?

Don't be silly - get her out there?

She's only little, a bit of snow and she'll be covered!

What I'm tring to say is - do dogs really need man-made coats? Mix of please say no I can't be arsed to go shopping and ooh - how exciting I could go buy her come clothes!

She will be fine. She will probably love the snow. Some smaller, short haired dogs benefit from coats, but most are fine.

MmeLindt · 16/12/2009 12:48

We were told that we should not get our puppy a coat last year as otherwise her fur would not get thicker.

She froze through the winter, the poor darling.

This year she has a snazzy coat.

It does depend on the dog, ours is a Maltese and susceptible to cold. She shivers if the temp goes beneath 4°.

What kind of dog is she?

minimu · 16/12/2009 12:53

Watch your dog and let her tell you! Most dogs are fine and actually more at danger of overheating in coats than not BUT it does depend on the dog and the situation.

I have an elderly dog who does wear a coat at night if we are camping as he shivers but the others are fine.

notimefortv · 16/12/2009 12:55

She's a Bichon Poo (Bichon Fri x Toy Poodle -v.little). My insinct is that they would tend not to go shopping to buy themselves a coat so we shouldn't either but as you say MmeLindt - brrrrrrr.....

cool - will see how she goes - just wondered how much of a markeing ploy the coats were rather than a necessity or if maybe certain breeds need them.

Maltese are very similar to Bichon Frise, in fact here in Switzerland they are called Bichon Maltese.

Get a coat.

My wee dog sits and shivers.

FabIsGettingReadyForChristmas · 16/12/2009 13:02

I want to get my cat a coat but Dh says she already has a fur onwe.

LynetteScavo · 16/12/2009 13:06

Cats don't like wearing clothes.

I spent hours trying to dress up my child hod cat.

They don't like riding in prmas either.

notimefortv · 16/12/2009 13:13

Hilarious Lynette - sounds like a therapy session thread now

My puppy has been shivering in thsi weather. I'm knitting him a lovely jumper for Christmas and dh is getting a matching hat

notimefortv · 16/12/2009 13:18

now you can see why I am put off putting her in a coat - it's just not right!

Am off for a walk now with her so we shall see - I will have fun trying to avoid the snow covered poop that seems to be in much abundance in our local field - gross.

Then I must get on with some work as that is what am s'posed to be doing in my empty, child free (but with a cute puppy) house today - eeek.

our woofa great swiss mountain dog loved the snow this year in jan - was 8mths

though guess he is used to the cold

he loved pulling kids about on sledge in garden

mmelindt · 17/12/2009 16:20

Blondes
You and Woofa should be exempt from this kind of thread. The thought of a Swiss Mountain Dog in a coat. and

As long as you don't tell me that you have a little bag to carry him about in.

Piffle · 17/12/2009 16:29

I have a hulking great ridgeback and she has a quilted linec coat for winter walks, otherwise she gets really shivery (African dogs lol)
she also has a chamois one we wet in summer to keep her cool.
No boots or legwarmers as yet though

mmelindt · 17/12/2009 16:33

I do fancy getting Daphne a waxed jacket. Do Barbour make dog jackets?

newpup · 17/12/2009 17:38

Have to say walked my lab with a friend this morning. Her cavalier was snuggled up in a coat and still shivered. My lab... well she was not bothered in the slightest would have gone for a dip in the icy river if I let her!!!

Its a breed thing! Toy dogs probably do need coats but not gun dogs it seems.

Although I do towel her off when I get in and her bed is by a radiator!

mulledfruitshootandcheese · 17/12/2009 17:41

Barbour dog coat!

morethanyoubargainfor · 17/12/2009 17:44

my lurcher who is very short haired has a coat for really cold weather.

Both my dogs have trover coats for after a bath or when we have been out in the rain.

My black curly coated retriever also has a chamois one that we wet for the summer to keep him cool. He loves the snow and doesn't have a coat, as he tends to spend most of the time in the snow on his back making snow angels. .

it really does depend onthe dog.

birdofthenorth · 17/12/2009 17:45

She'll be fine, and she'll love it!

My two mutts are over the moon!

mmelindt · 17/12/2009 17:52

oooh, fab. Only problem is that they are out of stock everywhere. Is this the favoured Christmas present for pampered pooches?

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/12/2009 19:55

mmelindt - what can i say - woofa is a wimp

it was snowing here earlier and had to kick him out for a wee, he may be a mountian dog by breed, but def a case of nature/nuture here

might get a coat but def wont be carrying the 10.5stone lump
