Puppy poos

9 month old border terrier has started having sloppy yellow poos. No obvious reason and it is not every time but wondered if anyone knows why this is? She is full of life and eats two meals a day quite happily. Any ideas?

Most obvious culprits would be worms, change of food or overfeeding. If you can rule these out then pop a sample (double wrapped, please!) into your vet for analysis.

Due to be wormed on Thursday so will do that tomorrow. She is on Hills and have just bought a bag of chicken which she had a few weeks ago. Am mixing it with the lamb I had already. Wondering if it could be the chicken although she has always wolfed this down and was trained using slivers of cooked chicken with no tummy problems. Thanks.

Unlikely to be the chicken but do check your amounts -overfeeding is a very common cause of loose stools.

Yiu can also try her on plain boiled rice and chicken for 48 hours - this can settle a tummy upset.

Mix in a liitle live yogurt to give her some friendly bacteria.

Should a 9 month old be on one or two meals a day? Cut out breakfast a while ago but she seems very hungry by lunch time. Will check quantities again tomorrow with the plastic measure. I tend to go by little scoops.

2 meals is better for their digestion and helps prevent bloat.
Does she get many treats?

Sherbert37 · 15/12/2009 22:32

She gets tiny treats when on walks and when training in the house. Each one is not big (the size of a finger nail) but perhaps they are mounting up. Will cut these down and measure out the food. Thanks for you help.

That's okay. Unlikely to be the treats. I'd worm her, do 48 hrs rice & chicken (with small dollop yogurt) and then if it continues take a sample to the vet. Certain bugs and persistent parasites can cause this.
Keep us posted.

Wonder if the culprit could be the Pets at Home advent calendar?

Wonder if it's collitus (sp?). our Border Collie puppy was prone to sporadic diarhoea sloppy poohs.

Whenever he was poorly, we'd give him small amounts of food, and usually something bland - possibly a scrambled egg if he was lucky!

The vet said that the problem was probably down to the breed and food we'd been giving him = whatever decent brand of dry food was on offer plus treats and scraps from our leftovers.

So now he has James Wellbeloved, which is wheat free, few scraps and no more sloppy poohs! (fingers crossed emoticon!)

Well, weighed the food tonight and it turns out I am not feeding enough. Should be 200g across the two meals which looks like loads. Don't think she could eat all that. Has had rice and chicken and yoghurt today so will await tomorrow's 'offerings' with anticipation.

Good luck - keep us posted please

We had exactly the same problem this week: sloppy, yellowy poo, with tiny little grains in it, but no apparent change in the puppy's (bouncy) behaviour. I wormed both dogs, and cut down on the puppy's food a little bit - cleared up in 36 hours. And now I find myself writing poo update emails to DH. [sad pet owner emoticon]

Our vet reckons pet manufacturers over-estimate the amount of food puppies need, especially if it's a rich dry food.

Googling 'puppy mushy yellow poo worms?' at night = not the most pleasant part of pet ownership...

Much better colour and consistency today. Thought I had finished with this kind of conversation a decade ago!
