Shitu pup only five weeks and crying for its mother

My friend bought a shitzu at the weekend and the poor little dog is crying all the time, she has now been told that the dog shoudl not have left its mother for another few weeks. The sellers were keen to sell the dog straight away. Is there anything she can do ease the dogs distress?

5 weeks omg should not leave its mum until 7 at the earliest. How is she feeding it.

She needs to get expert advice from the vets on how to care for this little pup if she has no experience.
Speak to the vets now

BellasSparklyBaubles · 08/12/2009 18:41

Agree with minimu - there's a whole raft of issues here and she really needs advice from her vet.

Was it from a puppy farm?

DisElfchanted3 · 08/12/2009 18:42

Thats awful!

Buda · 08/12/2009 18:42

5 weeks! That's terrible. Poor puppy.

DecorHate · 08/12/2009 18:44

I would say 8 weeks minimum tbh. The pup needs to go back to it's mum - can't believe it's able to feed itself yet. She should report the seller to the RSPCA if they refuse

differentID · 08/12/2009 18:49

did she buy it from a puppy farm or what? The only thing to stop the distress is to reuinte ot with Mum! Seriously- I would doubt of she's fully weaned yet.

Poor pup, he must be so distraught. Where did she buy him?

couture1 · 08/12/2009 20:52

I think from a normal family whose dog had pups.

Its much too young to be away from Mum. If it can't be reunited with her you can buy puppy and kitten formula milk and special bottles. I would suggest she supplement its solid food with this and also keep it as warm as possible.

5weeks

poor puppy - i wouldnt take a dog before 8 weeks, ideally 12

silly owner of the bitch

juneybean · 09/12/2009 01:00

Is this from a reputable breeder, if it's a pedigree I'd hope they'd not rehome them until 12 weeks! Poor thing.

DecorHate · 09/12/2009 12:14

Hmm if they had waited till the puppy was 8 weeks old, that would have been, let me work it out. oh yes Christmas weekend. Bet they wanted to get rid of the puppies before Christmas

sullysmum · 09/12/2009 16:59

Yes,im sure they did........... with smaller dog breeds its the normal thing to have them stay longer with their litter mates and mum than bigger breeds/mix breeds,ie chihuahuas usually should stay till they are at least 12 weeks old.

sowhatis · 10/12/2009 19:11

8wks is around 'normal' for letting a dog go to its new home. with 12wks being the max ideally.

put a 'ticking' clock under a blanket so it sounds like the mums heart, give it lots of milk/formula and cuddles.

how is the pup now?

EdgarAleNPie · 10/12/2009 19:47

this puppy can't go back there - probably they have got them out early becuase they can't cope. i agree it is very wrong - but they have the puppy now.

food e.g.

mashed fish/goats milk mix (fish from frozen blocks available at pets@home, or supermarket white fish is fine)

minced turkey/ goats milk yoghurt

really small amounts of course done very fine..., maybe 4-5 small meals a day - so not expensive - watch the puppy for reactions to the food they should be making solid but soft poos - diahorreah needs a vet visit.

and i think made up puppy forumla (human formula gives the squits) they can lap from a bowl if puppy is well and strong. (note: any illness in a puppy this age requires 24 hour nursing...if they get too weak to feed they are in real trouble...)

puppy is going to need alot of cuddling and play.

get a crate to be its 'home' and if your mate can, setup a little pen in whichever room they spend the most time with toys and vet bed lining- ideally puppy should not spend very long alone. they can be left for short periods to nap in their crate (puppies very much like babies in this respect!)

puppy should be put out to wee/poo after every little meal, and after every nap - they may still have accidents. set an alarm for overnight wee/poo outings - try at least every 4 hours (more often if not soon enough) and have crate by bed so you can hear when they want to go out,

The KC stipulates a minimum of 8 weeks.

Not much point doing the red face MUTT

She has the pup now and wants to do the best she can

Edgar, great post, and she should take it to vet as soon as she can (if she hasn't done so already)

Poor wee thing. I saw my pup at 5 weeks (still firmly with mum and litter mates of course) and they are so helpless at that age.
